Sommerskiing on the shrinking glacier

Stelvio Pass June 19, 2026

Stelvio is Italy's only summer ski resort with skiing from 2750m (early in the season) to 3340m (not 3450m which is the official figure!)

To get here, you drive the highest road in the Alps up to the legendary Stelvio Pass. The pass usually opens at the end of May and lots of motorcyclists, sports cars and cyclists crowd the hairpin bends. A tip is to drive up in the evening and stay at one of the hotels up in the pass.

There are about 10 hotels, almost all of which have closed down again, so you have about 2-3 hotels to choose from. I stayed at Hotel Pirvano at a good price with an ok breakfast. A worn-out hotel in Italian style but nice with walking distance to the cable car!

The lifts consist of a first cable car that takes you up to an intermediate station with more hotels, where the next cable car takes you up to Livorio. Up here at 3000m there is another closed hotel.
The glacier has shrunk considerably so you have to ski down to get to the flat lifts on the glacier (roller band to get back up).

The two T-bars Gletscher 1 & 2 were not running (but the slope was groomed). Instead you had to go Catski to the other side where two more lifts are spinning.

The skiing: typical summer skiing on a glacier. Quite flat and max 200m drop. Almost only ski clubs are here training. Great to be able to whizz along on skis in the middle of summer! Early in the season you can ski all the way down to the Stelvio Pass and get max 600m vertical drop.
The lifts are open 7:30-12:30

Tip: do a short summit trip up to Geitzerspitze 3467m, the peak above the tow lifts. Fantastic view!

Lift pass: official price 61 euros/day but I paid 52 (maybe because the Gletscher lifts were closed). NB! return your keycard and you will get 5 euros back.

Is it worth going here? Not really but if you are still nearby it is a fantastic experience. One or two days of skiing is enough.
