Mediocre & Mighty!

12/05/2026

So me thinks Walmendingerhorn is both mediocre & mighty. A strange combination of descriptors for sure, but it really is a ski area in two very distinct parts - the mediocre Heuberg and the mighty (comparatively) Walmendingerhorn. And how good is the name Walmendingerhorn! Just to make sure we got it right, we visited the region twice during the 2026 season. Once in early January when it was both bony then covered in fresh snow; and once in late February when there was fresh snow but cover down low was warm and wet.

One could be excused for not skiing the Heuberg sector at all. A shitty collection of low altitude traversing trails with the occasional short fall line run flowing into a cutesy village, only to be interrupted by a road crossing. Actually the road crossings are one of the few things that make the Heuberg sector interesting. For novices and beginners though, Heuberg is paradise. The criss-crossing trails are quite long and allow travel across an extensive portion of the valley up to Mittelberg. And the Parsenn combi lift & terrain toward the Riezlern end are perfect for the task too. Bit of a shame it is all so low altitude and heavily reliant on snowmaking.

But intermediates and better can avoid it all and just head directly for Mittelberg to go up the cable car; because even trying to ski from the crappy Heuberg end to Mittelberg, or worse, vice-versa, is an annoying exercise in mediocrity and waiting. From Mittelberg back toward Parsenn first involves EVERYONE (including all the sledders) going up a single surface conveyor to only then traverse across to the world's slowest double chair (Zaferna) that, depending on who is getting on, may load up with singles on each chair just to shit you even more! Should've taken the bus back down - what a sad thing to write, but true.

The reason we subjected ourselves to the Heuberg traverses was that we had parked at Ifen but found it closed due to avalanche risk. taking the Pendelbus to the top of Parsenn seemed a righteous thing to do - and it is. It's just something we will never repeat again.

So after reaching the pretty Mittelberg village we waited for 3 cable cars before getting on and up to Walmendingerhorn. More like it! A high alpine, precipitous feel (even though under 2,000m altitude), quiet (once all the cable car's human contents disappear), cold, and fresh snow (even if a tad heavy). The piste heading off the lookout deck runs gorgeously along the ridge initially, elevating one's mood immediately. Diving off the piste into the off-piste provided wonderful fall line skiing in light pines and open meadows despite only being on 300m ish of vertical.

Departing Walmendingerhorn on the valley trail (W1b) was both humourous and alarming. The first section of trail was ungroomed and essentially hardened, skied off crud. Nearly unskiable, the many beginner-intermediates that ski this region were in serious trouble, with many taking off their skis and walking rather than attempting to slide this hellscape. We bashed through ok, and thankfully for them the trail was groomed a few hundred metres further down. Did highlight that Walmendingerhorn is no place for beginners.

We understand the 60-year-old Walmendingerhorn cable car (40-pax) (yes 60 years old!) is set to be replaced for season 26/27 with a faster, shiny new 80-pax version, more than doubling uphill capacity. A good thing for shorter lift queues at the bottom, but a bad thing for first tracks competition on the hill on a powder day. Another reason to go straight to Mittelberg on a powder day and avoid any of the Heuberg lifts/pistes. And whilst on the subject of lifts here, it is staggering to note that the Zaferna double chair was only put in during 2001. For such a 'new' chair to be so rubbish and in a rubbish location is breathtaking. The placement is simply ridiculous in terms of connecting the ski resort. Needs to be nearer the cable car base to avoid the use of the conveyor to get there from Walmendingerhorn, but what would we know? High up on the mountain the Walmendingerhorn double is nearing 55 years old. That’s too old and slow for most mountains, and given its importance, it is bemusing as to why it has not been replaced.

The villages along the base of Walmendingerhorn & Heuberg have some absolutely fabulous hotels & other lodgings but honestly it just doesn't have anywhere near the vibrance of nearby Oberstdorf. So unless you are happy to spend all your time in said hotel (some of which do have awesome swimming pools etc), if you have your own transport (rental car or own car), we suggest staying in Oberstdorf. If relying on public transport (a reasonable contention here as the public transport is generally very good), then stay in Riezlern, Hirschegg or Mittelberg to avoid the pain of paying for bus tickets to cross the border into Austria. We would choose Mittelberg as it is the highest, has good services, and best location in a splendid mountain valley. Good to know to is that the free ski bus to Ifen stops directly at the bottom of the Parsenn combi lift. You can literally step out the door and onto the lift.

With the caveat that the snow needs to be deep and fresh, I can recommend Walmendingerhorn for good intermediate skiers/snowboarders & better; but avoid the lower Heuberg sector unless feeling the need for self-flagellation. Heuberg is great for family groups of novices & beginners, but only if it has full snow cover. Otherwise, head elsewhere in Vorarlberg or Tirol....

What's over there?
Walmendingerhorn is just one small part of the larger Kleinwalsertal ski area, but it has some of its best terrain. Best snow of the day too when I was there. Lots of potential, unfortunately not all open at the top, but for good reason as there was very high avalanche risk. After skiing the variable elephant snot on the valley trail out, got to Max' Hutte which was great.

We stayed in Oberstdorf - great place to stay if you have a car :-)
