Ski Yamagata for Beginners

This trip is ideal for beginners, including first timers, to learn to ski or snowboard, enjoy snow play, and experience Japanese culture. Rather than being a daunting process to learn to ski, this supportive almost all-inclusive package takes care of all the logistics including snowsports lessons, snow activities, lodging, transport, snow clothing and equipment, and breakfast and dinner. The trip is across 5 days and 4 nights, with a day of snow play and culture, and 2 days of skiing, but you can customise the trip to make it longer if you wish.

This tour is designed for novices and beginners. Lessons start from the basics and progress gradually.

Group Type

These trips are for private groups only i.e. you cannot join a group as a solo traveller. The maximum group size is 12 people. You can make a booking request to get a quote for your desired trip duration and group size.

Lessons

The snowsports lessons are private lessons for your party. It's ideal if everyone wants to learn to ski or snowboard, although it is possible to accommodate groups where some members wish to ski and others snowboard.

The minimum age for both ski and snowboard lessons is 4 years old.

Destinations

You'll start the trip staying at Pole Pole Farm which is a remote part of the Yamagata Prefecture near Gassan. From there, potential ski areas that you'll visit are Yudonosan or Asahi Shizenkan, which both have gentle slopes that are ideal for beginners.

For the second part of your trip, you'll stay in a hot spring inn in Zao Onsen and if you're feeling comfortable, you'll ski/snowboard at Zao Onsen, which is very picturesque on fine days. Or skiing at Yudonosan or Shizenkan is also possible.

Yamagata Beginners Itinerary

The following is a sample itinerary which can be customised.

Day 1 - Arrival in Yamagata

  • Travel from Tokyo to Tendo Station in Yamagata via bullet train or domestic flight.
  • Upon arrival, a private vehicle will pick you up and take you through serene countryside roads to Gassan Polepole Farm—your cozy home in the mountains.
  • After checking into your private cottage surrounded by snow-covered forests, unwind and enjoy a hearty welcome dinner made with local ingredients. This is your gentle introduction to rural Japan in winter.

Day 2 - Snow Fun & Local Culture

  • After breakfast, enjoy a full morning of snow fun at the nearby snow park. You’ll try exciting winter activities such as banana boat rides over snowy fields, snowmobile tours, sledding, and beginner snowboarding—all designed with safety and fun in mind.
  • In the afternoon, shift gears and experience Japanese culture with a hands-on kokeshi doll painting workshop guided by local artisans.
  • The day ends with a beautifully prepared Japanese dinner in the lodge near your cottage.

Day 3 - First Ski Experience & Hot Spring Retreat

  • Today you’ll begin skiing!
  • After breakfast, head to a nearby ski area known for its gentle, beginner-friendly slopes. Professional instructors will guide you through your first turns with care and patience.
  • In the afternoon, travel to a traditional hot spring inn (onsen), where you can soak in the mineral-rich baths and soothe your body after a day in the snow.
  • Dinner will be a multi-course Japanese kaiseki meal showcasing local flavors. Dinner will be at your ryokan.

Day 4 - Skiing at Zao

  • If you’re feeling confident, it’s time to explore another ski area. Continue your ski lessons, and if you’re ready, glide down longer and more scenic slopes at the famous Zao Ski Resort, home of the snow monster trees (juhyo) and breathtaking panoramic views. Whether you’re skiing or simply enjoying the snowy landscape, this day offers a deeper dive into Japan’s winter wonderland.
  • Return to your onsen inn for a final night of comfort, cuisine, and relaxation.

Day 5 - Departure

  • After breakfast and a leisurely morning, check out from your inn.
  • A private transfer will take you to Yamagata Station, where your journey back to Tokyo or onward begins.
  • You’ll leave with new skills, warm memories, and a deeper appreciation for Japan’s snow country.

Lodging

At the start of the trip you will stay at Gassan Pole Pole Farm which has villas/cottages. The villas have plenty of western comforts and there is also a communal lodge where you can have a lovely Japanese dinner. Here is more information on Pole Pole including our review. 

For the second part of the trip you'll be staying in a hot spring inn, known as a ryokan, in Zao Onsen. This is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in an onsen as well as the traditional Japanese culture, and feast on Japanese cuisine.
