Myoko Powder Progression

If you’re confident on groomers and have been waiting for the chance to ride powder and get into the trees, this is it. The Myoko Powder Progression trip isn’t ski school. It’s not a hardcore backcountry mission either. It’s something in between. This week has been created by Blanco Escape for people who are ready to build off-piste confidence the right way with no ego and no pressure. It is a fully guided and hosted week focused on real progress and good times in the very snowy region of Myoko Japan.

Highlights

  • Based in the very snowy Myoko Kogen where there are multiple ski areas in easy reach of the lodge & expect to ride 5 different ski areas during the week
  • Myoko is an authentic mountain town
  • You'll be based in a boutique lodge with a maximum of 8 guests
  • Target rider: Confident on groomers, ready to explore off-piste
  • Small group size with a maximum of 1:4 guide to guest ratio - 2 groups of 4, split by rider level
  • A supportive environment where you’ll learn how to ride powder, read terrain, make smart line choices, and get more comfortable in deeper snow and varied conditions.
  • For 3 nights a private chef will come to the lodge for multi-course Japanese dinners featuring seasonal ingredients. The other nights, your hosts will take you out to a few local restaurants that are the real deal
  • Opportunity to visit onsen (hot spring baths)

Group

Each trip is boutique in nature and has a maximum of 8 guests with 2 guides. Each 6 night trip can be for a mixed group where solos, duos and small groups can join others. Or if you want your own private trip, you can request a private tour, pending availability.

The Experience

Your instructor guides will start you with mellow glades and work you towards terrain that challenges you just enough to grow. You’ll be with a small group, riding alongside experienced guides and instructors who care more about your confidence than your speed.

And it’s not just about the riding. Every day ends with a soak in the onsen, a great meal, and time to unwind. You’ll eat well, sleep well, and feel at home the entire time. This is the trip for people who’ve dreamed of riding Japan’s snow but weren’t sure if they were ready. It’s the perfect stepping stone. You’ll leave with better skills, a deeper understanding of the mountains, and a few new friends to ride with next time.

Ski Resorts Near Myoko

From the cozy and stylish lodge near downtown Myoko Kogen, you’ll ride five different resorts throughout the week. Each has something different to offer and each one is chosen to help you step forward with your riding.

Akakura Onsen & Akakan (Myoko Kogen) — The Backyard

  • Best for: Warm-up laps, mellow powder, confidence building
  • Why ride here: These two connected resorts are just minutes from Blanco Escape. Perfect for Day 1 or low-vis days. They offer wide-open runs, accessible off-piste, and classic Japan tree skiing. When it’s dumping, these hills are gold.

Ikenotaira Onsen

  • Best for: Learning to ride trees, mastering soft snow
  • Why ride here: Low-angle terrain, glades for days, and almost no crowds. It’s the perfect progression resort. You’ll feel like a hero here as you dial in your powder turns.

Seki Onsen

  • Best for: True Japan experience, deep days
  • Why ride here: Seki doesn’t believe in grooming. It’s all natural terrain, barely developed, and a true throwback. The lifts are slow, but the snow is deep and untouched. This is the “hidden gem” you always hear about.

Madarao & Tangram - Inter-Connected

  • Best for: Pillows, playful terrain, creative lines
  • Why ride here: Madarao embraces off-piste. It has dedicated tree zones, gentle powder runs, and enough side hits to keep you smiling all day. This is progression paradise — forgiving terrain that rewards trying new things.

Suginohara (Myoko Kogen)

  • Best for: Long cruisers, sidecountry for confident intermediates
  • Why ride here: Home to the longest run in Japan (8.5km), Sugi is where your legs will get put to the test. There are some fun powder pockets and plenty of room to open it up. If you’ve built your skills all week, this is where you show them off.

Lotte Arai (Special Weather-Dependent)

  • Best for: Big terrain, lift-accessed back bowls, alpine feel
  • Why ride here: If conditions align, your hosts will take a trip out to Lotte Arai, home of Japan’s most luxurious resort with wide-open, avalanche-controlled off-piste terrain. It’s where the locals go when they want bigger lines and deeper turns. Think North America meets Japan. A perfect final challenge for guests who are feeling strong.

Lodging & Meals at Blanco Escape

Your week is based out of Blanco Escape Lodge, a cozy, stylish alpine retreat tucked into the quiet neighborhood of Taguchi in the heart of Myoko Kogen. This is one of Japan’s oldest and snowiest ski towns, where the mountains still feel local and the powder days are as deep as they come.

The lodge is warm, welcoming, and built for riders. With central heating throughout, oversized drying rooms, a spacious kitchen and dining space, and a fireplace lounge for après-ski hangs, it’s the kind of place where you feel at home the moment you walk in the door. Only one group is hosted at a time, so the space is entirely yours during the week. Whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, or as part of a private group, you’ll have plenty of room to stretch out, stash your gear, and relax after big days in the mountains.

The guest rooms are a mix of Western-style beds and cozy tatami spaces, with thoughtful design touches, blackout curtains, and mountain views. Bathrooms are shared. While not a luxury ryokan, the vibe is intentional, earthy, and warm, somewhere between a boutique hotel and a modern mountain lodge.

And the food? It’s a highlight. Each day starts with a hearty western style breakfast. Think fresh fruit, yogurt, granola and a couple of beautiful orange eggs on the side, accompanied with fresh juice and single origin coffee. Your hosts mix local flavors with Western staples to keep it interesting and filling.

Three nights during the week, you'll have a private chef for multi-course Japanese dinners featuring seasonal ingredients such as local vegetables, wild mushrooms, Niigata wagyu, and ocean-fresh seafood from the Japan Sea. The other nights, your hosts will take you out to a few of their favorite local restaurants which are spots you’d never find on your own. Whether it’s handmade soba, yakitori, or a hidden izakaya with two seats and no English menu, they’ve got you covered.

And yes, there’s a 7-11 just a few minutes down the road if you need late-night snacks or a cheeky beer after the onsen.

As for hot springs, Myoko is surrounded by them. We’ll make sure you soak in at least a few throughout the week. Expect piping-hot mineral water, centuries-old bathhouses, and mountain views that will make you forget about your phone.
