Chile Volcano Ski Touring Overview

This adventure ski trip is the ultimate skiing and mountaineering adventure across the Andes, choosing the highest and nicest volcanoes of the area around the Lake District and Northern Patagonia area.

There is no lift access and all ascents are with skis/skins and crampons and then you get to ride back down in alpine style. Some afternoons you will visit the spectacular and relaxing hot springs in the various locations. Split boards are also allowed but split-board crampons are mandatory.

Nights are spent in a combination of mountain huts/Refugios and hosterias & hotels.

There are many different volcanoes along the Andes and this trip can be customized to include any of the following: Lonquimay, Llaima, Copahue and Caviahue area, Villarica, Choshuenco, Casa Blanca and Osorno. There may also be some volcanoes of particular interest that are not on this list, so please inquire to discuss any other options as well.

Ability & FitnessSnow conditions can be variable from powder to breakable crust and everything in between so you should be a strong intermediate to expert skier who has some backcountry experience. Split boarders should be advanced to expert.

Most ascents are 1,400 metres or less with the exception of Llaima which is a 2,000m climb in a day. Needless to say you will require a good level of fitness.

You don't need to be a highly skilled mountaineer for these trips as the most technical elements of the climbs are the last hundred metres or so where there is a lot of ice which may require the use of an ice axe & crampons.

Sample Itinerary

The following 9-day itinerary is a sample of how a Chile Ski Touring Trip might play out. The itinerary is customizable and may also vary due to snow conditions & weather conditions at the time of the tour.

Day 1 (Arrival/Travel Day):
Arrival in Bariloche, Osorno or Pto Montt and dependent on your flight destination, Andes Cross (AC) will pick you up in any one of the 3 airports. AC recommend flying into Bariloche to enjoy a bit of Argentina and then driving across the Andes as it is totally worth the effort. Drive to Refugio Osorno and spend the night at this cozy mountain hut at 1400 metres, with beautiful views of Lago LLanquihue.

Overnight: Refugio Osorno

Day 2 (Climb/Ski Volcano Osorno):
Today you will climb Volcano Osorno as the first volcano on this trip in Chile. The climb takes approximately 5 hours to skin up this volcano (approx. 1400 metres of elevation gain). In general it is possible to skin most of the way however you will require crampons to get to the summit. Ski down back to the hut and spend the night there enjoying a nice meal with an awesome view and its magic sunsets.

Overnight: Refugio Osorno

Day 3 (Travel Day to Pucon):
A long travel day driving to Pucon, Chile. This drive goes across the Andes enjoying monkey puzzle forests and the landscape of the Patagonian steppe and the mountains.

Overnight: hotel in Pucon.

Day 4 (Climb/Ski Villarica & Hot Springs):
Climb up Villarica volcano (2,840 mts). Afternoon in the local hot springs. Relax, visiting the nice town of Pucon.

Overnight: hotel in Pucon

Day 5 (Travel day from Pucon to Lonquimay):

Cancellations during the activities
The program can be modified and changed anytime if the guide decides that fitness level, weather or other dangers are involved in the original plan. He has the right to modify the itinerary without previous communication to clients

About weather conditions
It is a fact that the weather in Patagonia and the mountains in general is unpredictable, implying situations where the weather can change in few hours forcing the guide to cancel the activity for safety reasons.

Strong winds can be an impediment to access some points where the tunnel shape of the valley makes the wind pickup speed and sometimes is almost impossible to keep moving forward, so in cases like this, or any other meteorological fact, the guide in charge can turn around and change the plan without previous notification.

About physical condition of the client
Mountaineering, trekking, ascents, expeditions, biking, climbing, kayaking are activities of great physical and psychic demand. Bad weather and strong winds demand more energy than normal, so every participant has to be aware of this and be sure his fitness level is according to the trip that they book.

Be aware that for most of the programs you will have to deal with nice open hiking / biking trails. For mountaineering trips you will transit glacier and moraines terrain, scree slopes and other kind of terrain that is physical and psychologically demanding and can cause a problem if participant is not experienced enough.

In case a participant’s physical/ psychic condition is below the average of the group/ program, or does not reach the level required, the guide will have the rights to cancel the activity for the participant. This participant will abandon expedition and will be taken safely back to civilization.

IN NONE OF THESE CASES, WILL THERE BE A REFUND OF THE AMOUNT PAID FOR THE ENTIRE TRIP

ALL EXTRA EXPENSES OF HOTELS, EXTRA GUIDE, RESTAURANTS, HOTELS OR OTHER COST GENERATED BY THIS EXTRA WILL BE COVERED BY THE CLIENT.
