Mt Cook

Stayed at the chalet for 2 nights in December. Loved the scenery. Chalet is basic and it served the needs of the family of 4.

Scenery is fantastic.

We ate dinner at the old mountaineer cafe which serves great food. Hotel breakfast is s...o..so..

We had two sunny days and took lot of pictures while hiking to see the glaciers. So.. anyone who goes to Mt Cook. Don't miss the hike to Hooker's Valley. The scenery is great at the end of the hike as well as on the way.

Took the Glacier explorer and I think the price is too high and there is no family fare. Great to see the Tasman glaciers on the explorer. Make sure you have enough memory on your camera. The superimposed picture taken by the explorer looks too fake and not worth to buy it ( my personal opinion).

The Big Kahuna

The lure of Mt Cook is the magnificent scenery of the mountains and glaciers of the region. The vistas can be appreciated from afar at the various strategically placed restaurants at the Hermitage Hotel or from the luxurious hotel rooms. Alternatively take a spectacular scenic flight in a helicopter or plane across the mountains. Or best of all, get up close and personal with the mountains through one of many mountaineering activities or heli skiing.

The small size of the Mt Cook village is an advantage because you feel like you’re away from it all where you can be one with the mountains. The only downside (for some) is that options for services, restaurants and bars are somewhat limited.

Many of the activities at Mt Cook are very weather dependent, and unfortunately the fickle weather sometimes closes in for days on end. Poor weather activities are limited, so take a book or two. However if the weather is fine, get out there and get cooking and make the most of Mt Cook.
