Sakadojo

Sakadojo

Sakadojo (Shunsai no Sho Sakadojo) in Muikamachi Onsen of Minamiuonuma is a delightful ryokan that’s surprisingly affordable. It features Japanese tatami rooms (most with bathroom) and Japanese style rooms with western beds (with bathroom). It has lovely onsen baths, and in addition to a breakfast buffet, evening multi-course meals are available.

Where is Sakadojo?

Sakadojo is located in Muikamachi Onsen in Minamiuonuma. It’s northeast of Yuzawa and 19km from the Echigo-Yuzawa train station, a drive that takes about 30 minutes.

The Muikamachi main street is about 600 metres away, which is reasonably quiet, especially relative to Yuzawa. You’ll need a car to get around and Sakadojo is in a good position to get to Hakkaisan Ski Area (which doesn’t have lodging at the base) and the other Minamiuonuma ski areas (ie the northern Yuzawa ski resorts).

Ski areas near Sakadojo: There is a 7-Eleven that’s just a 2 minute walk from the ryokan.

There are several restaurants that are about 10 minutes walk away.

Hotel Facilities & Services

As to be expected considering Sakadojo’s location in Muikamachi Onsen, the onsen baths are the main feature of the ryokan’s facilities, with alternating public baths during the day between the genders. One area has a lovely indoor onsen, a cool pot for aromatherapy, and a sauna. The other bath features a small open air bath that is surrounded by tatami mats.

The onsen water that’s prolific in the area is also used to heat the car park, which you’ll appreciate when big snowstorms hit the area.

Other services and amenities:
  • Guest lounge
  • A little bit of English is spoken by reception staff
  • Wifi

Dining

Breakfast can be included in your stay, which is a buffet with some western fare, fried eggs to order, and lots of Japanese items.

You can make a reservation for dinner. The dining room is housed in a building constructed from zelkova wood, using materials salvaged from a restored old mansion. Combined with the shoji screens and other traditional décor, it’s a beautiful spot to watch it snowing outside. Meals may include kaiseki or shabu shabu.

Otherwise there are several restaurants that are about 10 minutes or so walk from the ryokan such as Little Hokkaido, or if you want something simple, there is a 7-Eleven just a couple of minutes walk away.

Great Value Ryokan

21/09/2025
It's not called Snow Country for nothing!
Shabu shabu
Nice room
It was mighty snowy
Thank goodness for the onsen heated car park
I’d left it to the last minute to book accommodation in the area, and there wasn’t anything left in downtown Yuzawa. I found this place and the obvious downside seemed to be that I’d have to take a little drive to get to a few of the ski areas I wanted to visit. In the end it wasn’t a big deal at all despite it being ridiculously snowy during my stay, as so many of the roads in the Minamiuonuma area were heated with onsen water.

The major upside of Sakadojo was that I had a quality Japanese ryokan experience, at a fifth of the price that I would have needed to pay to stay in downtown Yuzawa. I stayed in a family room, and as is often customary in Japan, the cost is tiered depending on the number of people staying in the room, so for one person it was an absolute bargain.

ROOM
As well as being spacious and having a bathroom, the room was very good, and as they’d laid out a double futon, it was a comfortable sleep. The wifi worked well in the room.

MEALS
Breakfast was in the dining hall with its classic old-school chandeliers and grand décor from yesteryear. A gentleman was cooking up eggs, and there were mini croissants and rolls with jam, and yoghurt. Otherwise everything else in the buffet was delightfully Japanese. As is typical for me, I avoided the natto and sampled lots of other items.

I had dinner at the ryokan one night and then booked another night because it was so good. The kaiseki meal was exquisite, especially when accompanied by some nice local sake, whilst the shabu shabu dinner along with various appetisers was also excellent. The décor of the dining room was very traditional, which added to the special experience.

ONSEN
The onsen baths were very nice and a great way to relax after a big day out in the snow. The outdoor tatami bath was very lovely, although small and without a view, so my favourites were the indoor baths which were always very quiet.

SERVICE
The service was very good and the reception staff were patient with my rudimentary Japanese language skills, although a few of them spoke enough English to get by. They often checked if I needed anything.

The best omotenashi came from the car park gentleman. It absolutely dumped with snow during my stay, and I was incredibly thankful that the car park had onsen heating or there would have been some work required to dig out the car. Each morning the friendly man commenced clearing snow off my car of snow before I came out or was very enthusiastic to help me.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. It provided a lovely Japanese stay at a very reasonable price.
