Akakura Akarien

Akakura Akarien

Akakura Akarien Hotel is an affordable Japanese style hotel that has appealing features for international skiers and snowboarders, such as a lounge bar, western style breakfast (no dried fish!) and English speaking hosts. The boutique hotel has received a light renovation and has retained its Japanese charm, including tatami guest rooms with futons on the floor and a small onsen.

Where is Akakura Akarien?

Akakura Akarien is ideally located in Akakura Onsen, the main village of Myoko Kogen. It’s about 300m walk to the slopes of Akakura Onsen Ski Resort. The main street of Akakura Onsen with its many restaurants, is a mere 70m away, whilst it’s only 180m to ski school, child care and equipment rental shops.

The bus stop to other Myoko ski resorts is also less than 5 minutes walk away.

See the Myoko travel page for information on how to get there. Arrival and departure shuttles to/from Myoko train station can be provided (if pre-arranged).

Rooms

The hotel has 11 rooms that cater for up to 2, 3 or 4 guests. The rooms are Japanese style, with tatami mats (woven straw flooring) and futons, some of which are slightly raised off the floor.

The rooms are heated and have a TV. Yukata robes are provided.

Bathrooms and toilets are shared, including a small onsen bath for each gender. Or you can use the shower room if you want privacy.

Great lodge in the heart of Akakura

We stayed at Akakura Akarien in late February, and were so impressed with not only the cleanliness and comfortability of accommodations but also by the kindness and generosity of our host, Carlo. Carlo went above and beyond to provide us a delicious and filling breakfast every morning, as well as coffee and tea throughout the day. When we asked for ski hill recommendations, he provided and even offered to take us around the mountain to show us the best POW stashes.

We loved the bar downstairs in the evenings too, Carlo was so much fun to have a chat with and we really appreciated the atmosphere that allowed us to sit and get to know other folks in the lodge. We loved our stay here so much that we are already planning our trip back next year! Highly recommend staying at Akakura Akarien if you’re going to ski in Japan. :)
