Hume Hotel
Overview
Formerly known as the Heritage Hotel, the Hume Hotel provides a step back in time. Established in 1898, the hotel is now an enchanting landmark of Nelson. The hotel has many heritage touches with plenty of antique furnishings, some of which are Victorian or art deco, whilst other decorations are just an eclectic mix of kitsch and quirky. Regardless of your taste in décor, the Hume Hotel is incredibly charming and welcoming. The laid-back yet professional friendliness of the staff is quintessentially BC.
Where is the Hume Hotel?
The Hume Hotel is in Vernon St, in the heart of the town of Nelson. Nelson is in the southeast corner of British Columbia, Canada, in the Kootenay region.
Whitewater ski resort is nearby, and the region is home to many cat skiing and heli ski operators.
Hume Hotel Rooms
Don’t be fooled by the sloping floors as you walk down the corridors and wonder whether the hotel rooms will be dodgy. This certainly isn’t the case, as the rooms are tastefully decorated and ooze character and charm. Even though the rooms have historical furnishings, they also have modern touches such as a phone, TV and wireless internet access. And you needn’t fear that the beds are from the early 1900s.
All 43 rooms at the Hume Hotel are unique, but there are standard rooms with one or two beds as well as more spacious rooms. The pièce de résistance is the Rapunzel room which is dubbed as the honeymoon suite.
Facilities and Dining
After getting home from a hard day skiing, it can be incredibly tempting not to venture outside in the evening. One of the good things about the Hume Hotel is that you don’t have to. In addition to a liquor store, day spa and hair salon, there are multiple on-site options for dining and drinking.
The Library provides a lounge setting for a quiet drink or formal dining. It has amazing décor including old rugs, upholstered chairs and fabric hung ceilings. On the weekends, live jazz music adds to the quiet ambience. The inexpensive menu is very extensive and includes steaks, burritos and the Italian special.
The General Store Restaurant has the same menu, but is more suited to family dining. The pub, Mike’s place, also has the same menu, but is much more festive and has pool tables and big screen TVs. Or there’s the Spirit Bar, a nightclub.
And if you do want to venture outside, the Baker St restaurants and bars are only a hop, skip and a jump away.
