Untouched Finnmark Ski Touring

Guided Ski Touring & Splitboarding Adventure above the Arctic Circle, Norway

For ski touring and splitboarding lovers drawn to snowy summits, secluded fjords and the wild balance of mountain and marine adventure, exploring the Finnmark region of Norway is your way into the untouched Arctic.

Explore one of Europe’s last true frontiers on a week-long high-alpine ski tour. This is your chance to carve fresh tracks on untouched slopes few have seen. Set against sweeping fjords, sculpted peaks and soft Arctic light, you’ll roam across secluded, snow-covered terrain, where solitude and legendary descents await. Expect to ascend scenic summits, and if you’re up for it, drop into deep couloirs and traverse ridgelines high above the sea. Led by IFMGA-certified guides, this is Arctic ski touring at its purest: raw, remote and entirely your own.

Highlights

  • Ski tour untouched, uncrowded terrain in one of Europe’s wildest regions.
  • Travel with the best: IFMGA-certified guides who know the region inside and out, balancing safety with deep local insight.
  • Journey by boat into remote fjords, where towering glaciers and icy waters shape the landscape.
  • Summit glaciated peaks and ride a mix of terrain - from mellow bowls to challenging couloirs - carefully chosen each day to match conditions and group flow.

Itinerary

From the moment you exit the airport at Alta, everything is taken care of on the tour. Your driver will greet you and transport you to your accommodation at Nuvsvåg, a small and remote coastal settlement in northern Norway, set between fjords, open sea and steep mountains.. The journey along the coast sets the scene for the coming adventure, taking 2.5 to 3hr by road to Øksfjord, then a short ferry crossing and final drive to Nuvsvåg. Nuvsvåg will be your base for the entire tour. You head into the mountains by car and possibly by boat or directly on skis if the weather allows. You will be touring in terrain that ranges from open slopes to more defined features such as couloirs and ridgelines depending on conditions. Routes change throughout the week, with the goal of finding the best available terrain each day. By night, relax in the lodge, have a sauna and perhaps enjoy the dramatic Northern Lights. For detailed, day-by-day trip information, see the Itinerary tab.

Skiing & Snowboarding

The Untouched Finnmark trip is immersive and hands-on, created to help you connect with nature and push your boundaries. On an average day you will ascend and descend around 1,000 vertical meters (3,280 feet), spending four to six hours on the mountain. Your expert guides will tailor each route to match the group's experience and prevailing weather & snow conditions. If the snow, weather and group align, the group will take on steeper, longer routes, pushing further into the wild. It’s not tied to a fixed-day but always on the radar. Regardless of the day, you’ll enjoy some of the best powder skiing conditions of the year, with fresh, soft snow that transforms the landscape into a winter playground.

Despite its location above the Arctic Circle, the climatic conditions in the region are not as extreme as one might expect. February brings the coldest temperatures of the season, with daytime highs around -5°C (23°F) and nights dipping near -10°C (14°F). Clear nights can push lows below -15°C (5°F), and the wind chill can make it feel colder, especially on exposed slopes. In March, daytime highs range from -5°C to 0°C (23 to 32°F), with nighttime lows from -10°C to -15°C (14°F to 5°F). Inland and mountainous areas may see colder nights, but daylight extends to about 12 hours daily, giving you more time to explore. Expect days with partly cloudy skies with snowfall, mixed with cold, bluebird, sunny days.

February is the heart of winter, when reliable snowfall and the return of longer daylight hours align for ideal ski touring. Snowfall stretches from the peaks all the way to the sea. March brings longer days and mid-winter snowpack, offering reliable coverage from summit to sea. Shadier aspects hold cold, dry powder, while south-facing slopes soften in the sun as the seasons transition from winter to early spring.

Lodging & Meals

On the Untouched Finnmark trip you’ll be staying for the duration of the tour (7-nights) at the seaside Nuvsvåg, a small and remote coastal settlement in northern Norway, set between fjords, open sea and steep mountains. Accommodation is shared and spread across a mix of cabins and apartments. The setup is simple and practical, with twin bedrooms, shared living areas, and shared bathrooms. Group size and layout determine how the spaces are used. There is access to a sauna and simple common spaces, and a small local store within walking distance.

For the duration of the trip, all meals are taken care of, and feature tasty, local dishes prepared by your in-house chef. You will be asked for any dietary requirements or restrictions beforehand. Non-alcoholic beverages are included in the tariff to keep you refreshed throughout the day and with your meals. Each evening, enjoy a complimentary glass of wine or beer with your dinner. A limited selection of additional alcoholic beverages are available for purchase too.

Guiding

Every tour is led by IFMGA-certified guides with deep local insight, technical skill and a flexible, safety-first approach. These professionals don’t just follow the map; they adapt each day to the weather, terrain and group. Their expertise ensures you venture into remote, rugged landscapes with confidence and get the most out of every moment in the wild.

Professional Photography

The tour photographer will capture your adventure so you can stay present and enjoy the moment. After the trip, you’ll receive a digital photo library to relive the experience.

Ski Ability, Fitness & Gear

Tour dates are defined by ski ability/experience (i.e. Intro. Intermediate, Advanced, Expert) but as a general rule to get the most out of this trip, at least intermediate ski or snowboard ability in mixed snow off-piste terrain is best. Some ski-touring/splitboarding experience is useful, but not necessary on the 'Intro' dates. You should be comfortable in the outdoors and have a good level of fitness (i.e. sport & exercise are part of your daily routine).

Ski-touring & splitboarding gear (including required avalanche safety equipment) is not included in the tour price and are not available locally.

Getting There & Away

The start and finish of the Untouched Finnmark tour is at the town of Alta in far-northern Norway. You will be picked up at the airport in Alta to start your tour and dropped back there on the final day. Direct flights are available from Oslo (OSL) airport to Alta (ALF) airport, with a flight time of 2hr. Oslo can be reached from anywhere in the world.

Pre-Trip Support

The tour operators will make sure you have everything for your trip. You’ll get all the details you need for your itinerary and packing list, plus unlimited support via email if you have any questions.
