Feldkirch Vorarlberg Austria

Feldkirch is a picturesque city in far-western Vorarlberg Austria, with excellent public transport links to nearby ski resorts & the airports in Zurich & Innsbruck.

A delightful place to visit in and of itself, we have used Feldkirch as not only an overnight stop whilst travelling between regions, but also as a place to take a break from the mountains, AND as a base to go skiing using the train. From exploring and dining in the looming Schattenburg castle, wandering along the Ill River, strolling the old town lanes and passages, going shopping in the town centre, or just relaxing in one of the hotels, we have always found a stay in Feldkirch to be a memorable part of our European ski journeys.

Skiing & Snowboarding from Feldkirch

Whilst the entire state of Vorarlberg and beyond can be accessed from Feldkirch, from a day trip perspective there are a handful that are achievable. All the resorts can be reached within a n hour by public transport (train & bus) from Feldkirch railway station.

  • Silvretta Montafon is an extensive area of over 140km of trails across two mountains, with a deserved reputation for great snow & amazing freeride terrain on powder days. Trains go direct to Schruns from Feldkirch. From Schruns one can walk to the ski lifts or take a bus and head further to St Gallenkirch or beyond.
  • Brandnertal is a traditional ski resort above the city of Bludenz at the start of the Montafon valley just a short train ride from Feldkirch, then local bus to the ski lifts. It shares a multi-day lift pass with its neighbouring ski resorts of Golm & Silvretta Montafon.
  • Golm is a family friendly ski mountain with few international visitors & is worth a look on a quiet powder day. Accessible by train from Feldkirch to Vandans and then a short bus ride.
  • Gargellen is nestled high in the Montafon valley and ais a powder hounds delight. Requires a train to Schruns then a bus but is definitely doable from Feldkirch.
  • Malbun in Liechtenstein is an interesting place to ski just 1hr by bus from Feldkirch, or less if driving. A great one to add to your ‘weird countries I have skied list’.
