Ischgl Freeride Camp

Off-piste Freeride Guided-Progression Tour in the Paznaun Valley

Ischgl is a resort in the west Tirol of Austria, on the border with Switzerland. Rather famous for parties, it is also rightly famous for its freeride skiing terrain (plus the most modern ski lifts in the Alps!). And it snows a lot here too, with the region close to some well-known powder magnets nearby in the Arlberg. Together with the Swiss duty-free zone of Samnaun, plus the smaller resorts of Galtür, Kappel and See, it forms one of the best ski areas in the Alps for a freeride camp.

This a trip for freeride beginners as well as experienced freeriders and anyone in between. Camp participants will be split into 3 groups according to their ski level. Accommodation will be in self-contained apartments with shared facilities, so come as a solo, couple or group for some of the best lift-accessed freeriding in the world.

Highlights

  • 4 days of world class lift-accessed freeriding with an expert guide/coach showing you the way.
  • Stress-free & fun skiing in a small group matched to your own ability.
  • Stay in the traditional Austrian village of Kappl with views across the valley.
  • Explore the Austrian ski resorts of Ischgl, Galtür, Kappel and See, plus the Swiss resort of Samnaun.
  • Improve your freeride ski technique & increase your skills & knowledge through thoughtful coaching from your guides.
  • Party hard if can, you are in Ischgl after all but remember to be ready for big ski days too!

The Skiing

Ischgl and the Paznaun valley in Austria is heaven for the freerider. Consistent volumes of snow, incredible terrain, and a selection of wonderful ski resorts make it the perfect location for a freeride camp. Whilst Ischgl is the main menu with its stunning terrain & lift system, the smaller nearby ski areas of Kappl & See are almost deserted on powder days. Kappl has Freeride World Tour pedigree too, so you know there is some fun to be had! At the top of the valley, Galtür provides a different feel to the other Paznaun resorts, and linked to Ischgl, the Swiss resort of Samnaun has the decidedly strange ‘duty-free’ aspect to go with its smaller crowds & unreal terrain.

During the camp, while riding the best off-piste in the valley with your guides there is also a focus on avalanche awareness, orientation in terrain, safety, and ski technique. 3 guides will each have a group of guests with similar ski ability to allow for the best possible ski experience in terms of fun & progression.

After skiing, Ischgl has some of the world’s most raucous après ski, so be prepared! And remember that you will have a big day skiing the following day.

Program

The camp starts on the afternoon of the first day at the accommodation in Kappl. After meeting the guides & enjoying a welcome dinner in the evening, the following four days are spent skiing the best off-piste snow & terrain in the valley in your small group of skiers. Enjoy world-class après ski & relax in the sauna at the end of the day. For detailed information on the day-to-day program, see the Itinerary tab.

Lodging & Meals

Accommodation on the Ischgl Freeride Camp tour is in self-contained apartments at the Paznaun valley village of Kappl. A welcome dinner is included in the tariff, but all other meals are not. Local restaurants are aplenty, & local food markets can be utilised to stock the apartment's kitchen for self-catering. For more info about food & accommodation on the tour, see the Lodging tab.

Ski Ability, Groups & Gear

The camp is for both those new to freeriding, as well as experienced freeriders (and of course anyone in between!). As a minimum you should be a good skier on piste, but no previous freeride experience is necessary.

Participants will be split into 3 groups according to their ski level, with each group having their own guide/coach assigned. Each group will have coaching on the mountain as required, plus there will be the opportunity for evening photo/ video analysis & coaching to help prepare you for the coming day.

Freeride ski rental is included in the tour price. If you have your own freeride skis, bring them if you want. you will need to bring all your other ski gear including boots, poles & helmet.

Avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe along with an avalanche backpack ARE included in the tariff. If you have your own, please bring it.

Getting There & Away

The camp is held at Ischgl in the Paznaun valley, Tirol Austria. Accommodation is in Kappl. The village of Kappl is a few kilometres from Ischgl, and around 96km by road from Innsbruck. The nearest major centre is Landeck-Zams, 21km north of Kappl. Closest major gateway airports are Innsbruck (INN), Munich (MUC) & Zurich (ZRH).

Kappl is well serviced from all airports by train & bus via the train station at Landeck-Zams. The Landeck-Zams bahnhof (train station) is on the main line between Switzerland & Innsbruck. The route 260 bus goes regularly from Landeck all the way up the Paznaun valley to Kappl.

If driving your own car or a rental, the accommodation has car-parking nearby, with no reservation needed.
