Program
The camp starts on the afternoon of the first day at the accommodation in Bad Gastein. After meeting the guides & enjoying a welcome dinner in the evening, the following four days are spent starting early for first lifts & skiing the best off-piste snow & terrain in the valley with your small group of skiers. Enjoy fun après ski & a fine dinner at the day. For detailed information on the day-to-day program, see the Itinerary tab.
The Skiing
The Gastein valley in Austria consists of several resorts and offers a wealth of terrain and interesting hikes. The most famous for freeride is Sportgastein, which is just a stone’s throw from the accommodation and will feature regularly in the camp's skiing adventures. The upper alpine & tree zones of Stubnerkogel-Angertal-Schlossalm (above Bad Gastein & Bad Hofgastein) offer fabulous freeride descents with comfortable, high-tech ski lifts. On bad weather days, Dorfgastein-Grossarl always has lifts running to access its surprising off-piste (much of which is hidden from the view of most visitors!).
During the camp, while riding the best off-piste in the valley with your guides there is also a focus on avalanche awareness, orientation in terrain, safety, and ski technique. The 3 guides will each have a group of guests with similar ski ability to allow for the best possible ski experience in terms of fun & progression.
Lodging & Meals
Accommodation on the Gastein Freeride Camp tour is in double, twin or triple rooms at the Alpenpension Haslinger in Bad Gastein. Half-board (breakfast & dinner) is included in the tariff, but lunches are not and will be had on the mountain. For more info about food & accommodation on the tour, see the Lodging tab.
Ski Ability, Groups & Gear
The camp is for both those new to freeriding, as well as experienced freeriders (and of course anyone in between!). As a minimum you should be a good skier on piste, but no previous freeride experience is necessary.
Participants will be split into 3 groups according to their ski level, with each group having their own guide/coach assigned. Each group will have coaching on the mountain as required, plus there will be the opportunity for evening photo/ video analysis & coaching to help prepare you for the coming day.
Freeride ski rental is included in the tour price. If you have your own freeride skis, bring them if you prefer. You will need to bring all your other ski gear including boots, poles & helmet.
Avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe along with an avalanche backpack ARE included in the tariff. If you have your own and prefer to use it, please bring it.
Getting There & Away
The camp is based at Bad Gastein in the Gastein valley, Salzburgerland Austria. The town of Bad Gastein is 105km south of the glorious city of Salzburg. The closest airports are Salzburg (SZG) (1½hr drive) & Munich (MUC) (>3hr drive). The fabulous Bavarian city of Munich is the gateway for all intercontinental travellers and is worthy of a night’s stay before the tour (as is Salzburg!). Bad Gastein is easily accessible from the airports via train to the bad Gastein railway station in the heart of town, right near the ski lifts and a short walk or bus ride from the tour's accommodation at Alpenpension Haslinger. The train journey is a pleasing & environmentally friendly way to get to the ski resort. The route 550 bus leaves from out the front of the train station (direction Böckstein or Sportgastein), get off at Bad Gastein Hirschkar stop (about 3-4min travel).
If driving your own car or a rental, the accommodation has car-parking nearby, with no reservation needed.
