Private Ski Hill!

06/06/2018

Our first visit to Jakobshorn in January 2018 was during a ‘snowmaggedon’ event. The World Economic Forum (WEF) was on (which is a surprisingly good time to visit because there are way less skiers than normal) and Jakobshorn was the only mountain open all the way to the top throughout the region. Because the weather was so hectic (high winds, blowing snow & hardly any visibility), it meant we skied it in deep windblown powder with exactly 5 other people in each cable car ride to the top. The first run dropping into the pleasantly steep piste 5 was a little like skiing braille but with refreshing face shots each turn. All of the runs above the treeline were powder covered so no grooming was evident which suited me just fine. Sadly no other lifts opened that day, just the two cable cars, but when it is bitterly cold and you have a place to yourself, skiing laps on 1,050m of vertical is more than enough to fill in a day. And a few bevvies at the end of the day at Bolgen Plaza proved to be the perfect end to the day. What an interesting experience.

On this, our first ever visit to Davos, we stayed near the Davos Dorf end of town in a gorgeous bed & breakfast called BnB Haus im Sand. A bit of a walk to the station or a bus, but it did the job beautifully. The accommodation was way too far from the Jakobshorn cable car to walk in the severe storm, so I took the bus and went the long way round the town to Davos Platz train station. Had there been a train coming I would have caught it from Davos Dorf for the one stop to Davos Platz. Instead I caught it on the way back as it was about to depart when I came onto the platform! So pleasing to have public transport included with the ski pass.

With the WEF on, it was probably not the best time to experience Davos and its nightlife, but what I did see did not impress me. Not a particularly pretty place, I had greater expectation for it to be be a little more overtly Swiss. Instead, aside from the prices (which were Swiss!!), I found it to be just an engorged rural town that had outgrown itself and was now vying to be a small city. Thankfully the powder more than made up for any disappointment with the town.

Was lucky enough to ski a few days on Parsenn, either side of this day at Jakobshorn, which is some ways is a huge contrast, but in others was quite similar. The biggest similarity was very few other skiers in evidence, and deep powder on all the pistes. I could get used to skiing on my what felt like my own private ski hill…..
