Bill's Gulmarg Tour

At Bill's Trips we want you to experience the best of Gulmarg India. That's why we stay at the best hotel, have a low client to guide ratio and limit our guests to 12 per trip.

We stay at the grand Highlands Park Hotel which sits in a majestic position on the Gulmarg plateau with uninterrupted views of all the terrain accessed by the "World's Highest Gondola".

Our highly qualified experienced guides structure each day around your specific needs. Each morning we assess the weather, avalanche and snow conditions, and present you with the best available options for the day. Our focus is on finding and riding the best untracked snow possible using all the resources we have available to us. When the conditions are right you can cut laps straight off the gondola, other days we utilize taxis to return us to the village after skiing the trees off the Gulmarg plateau, and sometimes we put on skins or strap on snow shoes for a short hike to access or return from our favourite runs.

The Highlands Park Hotel

Amazing alpine and tree skiing

An authentic Indian village

The choice is yours, ski the trees, explore the upper mountain, drop off the plateau to outlying villages, or partake in formal avalanche awareness and backcountry skills training. With a client to guide ratio of 4 to 1 we are able to group together guests with a similar skill level, equipment choice and daily objectives.

If and when your rest day arrives you can walk to the markets to shop for local handicrafts and soak up the atmosphere, or simply relax at the Highland Park and take in the views.

Breakfast is served in the Highlands Park restaurant where you can savour your meal while eyeing off the untracked lines, then at the end of the day, ski through the trees to the back gate, enjoy an après beer in the lounge and check out your tracks. Kashmiri and western style banquets are served each night with great style and laughs in the hotel restaurant while we relive the day's adventures.

No trip to Kashmir is complete without a stay on one of Dal lakes famous houseboats and checking out the vibrant city of Srinagar . At the end of your final day on the mountain we head to one of Bill's close friend’s houseboats to relax and enjoy the hospitality. Finish off your adventure with a city tour taking in the sights, sounds and smells, shop for rugs, pashminas and handicrafts and end the day with a relaxing shikara cruise on Dal Lake.

A trip to Gulmarg is way more than just the skiing or boarding. To immerse yourself in such a unique culture and have the opportunity to get to know and laugh with the locals is reason enough for a Kashmir adventure. We offer a safe, personalised and unforgettable Gulmarg Experience.

Freshies for everyone

A fabulous cultural experience

And totally sick lines!

Your Guides:
BILL
When the gondola first opened in 2005, Bill was there. Bill was employed by the Jammu and Kashmir government to manage the avalanche hazard and train the local ski patrol. He has been patrolling for 20 winters and has skied all over the world preferring places not yet discovered by the masses.

Bill is one of Australia's best know skiers. Over the years he has featured on many magazine covers, in documentaries and written numerous articles on new destinations, avalanche safety and backcountry skiing. When not guiding in Gulmarg he is the assistant director of the ski patrol at Mt Hotham, Australia.

His passion for backcountry skiing and out-of-the-way places drew him to Gulmarg where he now calls home for the northern winters. During his time there, Bill has formed great friendships with the locals and is well respected in the community. There is no one better to introduce you to the magic of Gulmarg.

DAVID MARCHI
When Dave isn't heli-guiding in Alaska or backcountry guiding at home in California he is most likely guiding people somewhere else on the planet. He has lead ski and climbing expeditions all over the world including Mt Denali, Antarctica, Patagonia, the Himalaya and New Guinea. Before life as a guide, Dave was a ski instructor and race coach for the U.S. Para Olympic team. David also spent the winter of 2006 in Gulmarg passing on his years of experience to the newly formed Ski Patrol.

SAM DUNLOP
Sam grew up at Merijig at the base of Mt Buller in Australia and skied freestyle as a kid before swapping to teles. A world class tele skier, Sam has achieved podium finishes in Big Mountain free skiing events in the US and New Zealand. He has extensive backcountry experience including months of ski touring in the Himalaya. Sam worked as a Patroller for 9 years in Australia, the US and New Zealand before moving full time to New Zealand where he now runs telemark clinics and in his free time explores the Southern Alps.

Through years of guiding, patrolling and exploring Gulmarg, Bill, David and Sam have gained an intimate knowledge of the mountain. They are great friends and their combined skills, experience, professionalism and energy ensure a safe and super fun Gulmarg adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive at Srinagar airport early afternoon to be met by Bill or one of his team for the 1-2 hour transfer via private vehicle direct to the Highland Park Hotel (your accommodation for the next 12 nights). Pre dinner, Bill and your guides welcome you to Gulmarg with a resort familiarisation and trip overview presentation.

Day 2-13
Twelve full days of guided off-piste adventure skiing and snowboarding with a maximum client to guide ratio of 4 to 1. The snow and weather conditions are assessed by Bill and the other guides each morning and the best available options will be presented over breakfast. Choose to stay within the resort, explore off the top station or ski off the plateau to the valley floor. With a maximum of 12 guests and 3-4 guides on hand, groups can be split to meet everyone’s daily objectives. Untracked, great snow is usually on offer somewhere nearby. You will be instructed in the use of backcountry equipment and safe travel practices while exploring the mountain each day. Further avalanche awareness and rescue training will be provided to groups and individuals who are keen to learn the finer points of back-country safety.

Day 13
A full day of guided skiing and snowboarding before an early evening transfer to your Dal Lake floating accommodation for the next 2 nights.

Day 14
Explore Srinagar city with a sightseeing and shopping tour then finish off the day with a shikara cruise around Dal Lake and a delicious meal on the houseboat.

Day 15
Listen to the "call to prayer" for one last time, relax on the houseboat or go for another shikara ride before a late morning departure to meet your flight.

OPTIONS:
  • Some guests like to arrive the day before the trip commences to acclimatise on the house boat for a night.
  • Subject to bookings it may be possible to extend your stay at the Highlands Park Hotel for a night or two if snow conditions are too good to leave.
  • If your schedule and budget allows, extensions of a week or more can be arranged prior to the commencement of your trip.
