Aomori to Iwate Backcountry Tour

This backcountry ski touring and splitboarding trip heads to Aomori Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture, which are remote and located in northern Tohoku on the Honshu Island (main island). Here you'll experience the best of Japan’s deep powder, traditional culture, and Japanese cuisine, far away from the hordes that head to Nagano and the popular spots in Hokkaido.

Powderquest are experts in backcountry tours and you'll be guided by a native English-speaking IFMGA-certified ski guide and supported by a bilingual (English/Japanese) tail guide.

After big days of skinning, you'll retreat to your ryokan haven and soak in the onsen (natural hot springs) onsite, which is a perfect way to regenerate tired legs. Each night you'll enjoy a group dinner with your guide, where you'll sample plenty of Japanese cuisine along with local craft beer and sake.

Highlights

  • Backcountry ski touring / splitboarding in zones that are off the beaten track, far away from the crowds of Niseko in Hokkaido. Hakkoda and Mount Iwate are famed for being incredibly snowy and scenic zones.
  • Stay in traditional ryokans with onsen baths in authentic regions
  • Culturally immersive experience with a focus on local connections and cuisine, including group dinners each night featuring local fare, sake, and craft beer
  • Limited to 6 guests to maintain flow, safety, and access to fresh tracks
  • Travel by private van, staying mobile to access the best conditions
  • Native English-speaking IFMGA-certified lead ski guide + bilingual (English/Japanese) assistant tail guide

Who is the Tour Suited To?

The Aomori to Iwate Backcountry Tour is suited to expert snowboarders and skiers with experience in deep snow, who are keen on a unique, lesser traveled side of Japan, enriched in local culture and onsens. If you're seeking deep powder, adventures without ski lifts, and challenging ski touring/splitboarding, then this trip is well suited to you.

You should be in very good shape and confident skiing deep powder, navigating tight trees, and handling varied terrain. Participants must ski or ride ungroomed black diamond runs without hesitation and have strong ski touring or splitboarding experience, including efficient transitions, skinning steep terrain, and executing kick turns. Snowboarders should maintain speed on flats, hold a solid traverse line, and maneuver smoothly to keep the group moving, sometimes using ski poles for assistance.

You should be comfortable climbing 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) per day in multiple ascents, with the ability to handle up to 1,500 meters (4,900 feet).

You will require backcountry touring equipment for this trip - a packing list will be provided.
