Aomori Freeride Tour Japan

Aomori is as far north as you can ride on Honshu. The Aomori Prefecture is unwesternised, quiet and remote, cold, and stormy and that’s exactly why you want to go there. Aomori City is the snowiest city on earth, hammered by relentless systems off the Sea of Japan.

Aomori Spring Resort will be your freeride basecamp. You’ll stay on-mountain at a 3-star hotel that sits on the slopes of the ski area. There are no distractions from the riding because there is nothing at Aomori Spring besides the north facing slopes, terrain park features, and lots of snow, and of course, the hotel. The Rockwood Hotel has an onsen that includes outdoor baths, massage services, a bar, lounge area and movie room.

You'll ride at Aomori Spring because it's right outside the hotel door, but this tour has freedom built in to move when the snow and weather gods say so. Your guide is dialled into the storms and weather and a 4WD van on standby.

The Hakkoda Ropeway is a heavy hitter in Aomori considering the oft deep snow and abundant terrain amongst old growth forests, but the weather is brutally fickle, so it needs to be timed just right. The Hakkoda area also has a few epic onsen options tucked away that are perfect for a post-ride soak. On really stormy days when blizzards close down the Hakkoda Ropeway and Aomori Spring gondola, there are a couple of local ski-jos that are more protected from the weather and are absolute gems.

Midweek you'll head down to the town of Ajigasawa which is not far from Aomori Spring and on the coast. It's a chance to explore away from the resort and eat some local food from izakayas. Not surprisingly there is lots of fresh seafood on offer.

Terrain

The focus of the tour is freeride terrain where inbounds powder laps are mixed with lift-accessed backcountry amongst widely spaced trees and the occasional open zone. Night riding at the local hill extends the shred sessions and Aomori Spring is one of the few places in Japan with a 22ft Super Pipe and terrain park.

If you have any questions or want to check availability you can make a booking request.

Group

Group size is a maximum of 6.

Ability Level

To join this tour, you must be able to ride at an advanced ability level which includes the following:

  • You ride at a moderate and continuous pace
  • You frequently ride off-piste (un-groomed terrain) at a resort
  • You can ride in most conditions from powder, hard pack, crusty or tracked snow
  • You maintain a continuous pace riding in trees
  • You maintain a continuous pace on traverses and flat sections
  • You are confident riding in low visibility conditions (snow or fog)
  • You can safely navigate around hazards, i.e. trees, open creeks, tree wells, holes etc.
  • you need some fitness endurance to comfortably ride for the duration of the trip. At times short hikes (5-10 minutes) may be necessary.

The more accurately you’re able to self-assess your on-snow abilities, the more you (and others in your group) will be able to relax and enjoy your tour. Or you can book a private tour for you and up to 5 friends, so you're assured you'll be riding with like-minded people. Please get in touch for more information.

The Mint Tours in Japan are 6 nights and run from Sunday to Saturday. If 6 nights isn’t enough, then you can combine it with another tour. For example you could head to Asahikawa and start a new tour.

Itinerary Aomori Freeride

Aomori is remote but it's easy to get there. You can get a bullet train (Shinkansen) from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori train station which only takes a few hours. Alternatively you can fly into Aomori Airport which receives some international flights as well as domestic flights from Tokyo.

If you're arriving from North America or Europe, it may be wise to arrive in Tokyo on the Saturday so you've got some time to get into the right time zone and get acclimatized to Japan.

Day 1 – Sunday ‘Arrival Day’

  • Make your way to the meeting point at Shin-Aomori Station or Aomori Airport where your guide will meet you and drive the group to the hotel.
  • After check in, you’ve got some free time to settle in to your room, unpack and set-up your equipment for the adventure ahead.
  • In the evening, meet your guide for an info and welcome session. Your guide will explain what’s in store for the week, the current weather, run through equipment and answer any questions you have.
  • Join the crew for dinner and get to know the rest of the group.

Days 2 to 6 – Monday to Friday On-Snow Guided Days

You’ll spend the next 5 days riding in the Aomori region. The tour itinerary is flexible so you can ride at the best ski area on the day. Your guide will monitor storm cycles to ensure you’re scoring the best conditions as weather and snowfall affect each ski area differently. This is the general gist of how each day will look.

Mornings

  • The breakfast buffet is open early and you can enjoy breakfast at your leisure.
  • Your guide will advise the departure time the evening before. If you’re riding straight out the door at Aomori Spring, you’ll have plenty of time before the lifts open at 8:30. If you’re traveling further afield, the departure time is typically around 7:45 – 8:00 am.

During the Day

  • Your guide will eliminate any guesswork and show you where to go. You’ll be the first into untouched tree runs, hunting down hidden powder stashes, and exploring the out-of-bounds zones most riders miss.
  • Afternoons
  • If you’ve spent the day riding pow at Aomori Spring, you’ve got plenty of options to unwind. Soak in the onsen, book a massage, or chill with the crew for some après at the bar.
  • If you’ve been exploring another spot, you might find yourself relaxing in a local onsen, grabbing a bite at a sushi train, hitting up the 7-Eleven for snacks before heading back to the hotel.

Evenings

  • After a big day on the slopes the evenings are your time to unwind. Head to the hotel’s indoor or outdoor onsen for some relaxation, or grab a beer with the crew in the bar. You can play a game of pool, or just kick back and recharge before dinner.
  • Delicious buffet meals at the hotel are included throughout the week.

Day 7 – Saturday Departure Day

  • Enjoy one last breakfast at the hotel before checking out.
  • Your guide will provide a transfer back to the train station or airport, leaving you with epic memories of your Aomori adventure.

Lodging

You'll be spending 6 nights at Rockwood Hotel in a single room (ie one person per room) with a western bed and ensuite bathrooms. The Rockwood Hotel sits in a prime position near the base of the Aomori Spring Resort where you'll be riding some days. Breakfast and dinner is a buffet feast and another highlight of the hotel is an onsen, with indoor and outdoor baths for each gender. Here is more information on the Rockwood Hotel including our review.

If you're traveling with your partner a twin or king room can be arranged. These rooms are limited and subject to availability at time of booking.
