Thredbo Accommodation - Where to Stay

Thredbo offers a good range of lodging options. Unlike Perisher that predominantly consists of ski lodges, Thredbo accommodation also includes hotels, apartments and houses. There is even a hostel, although most of the accommodation at Thredbo comes with a very deluxe price tag for the privilege of staying on-mountain.

There are three main zones for accommodation at the base of the ski resort. Thredbo Village is the central village and the heartbeat of the town, with shops, restaurant and vibrant bars. None of the accommodation here is ski-in ski-out, as the Thredbo River and a road separate the village from the ski slope base at 'Valley Terminal' (where intermediate and above riders can access two chairlifts and the gondola).

The Thredbo Alpine Hotel is the closest accommodation to the slopes. It’s one of the original Thredbo hotels and offers rooms ideal for 2 to 3 guests. The hotel sometimes hosts some humongous après ski events. Otherwise most of the Thredbo Village lodging is a short walk or shuttle ride away from the ski resort.

Close to the lifts & novice slopes at Friday Flat, Woodridge is a good spot to stay for beginners, those who want ski or snowboard lessons, and those who need childcare (when it’s operational!). The River Inn is rightfully popular here as it is uniquely ski-in ski-out to the Friday Flat area. This zone also has various apartments and is close to the Thredbo Leisure Centre (& pool). A potential con is that there are negligible dining or drinking options within this zone.

The Crackenback Ridge area near the Thredbo golf course has some privately-owned grand-chalets, a few of which are ski-in ski-out.

Lake Crackenback

Lake Crackenback Resort is 16.5km to the northeast of Thredbo and provides luxury studios, apartments and chalets. Given its close proximity to the SkiTube station (next door!), Lake Crackenback Resort is also well-positioned to visit Perisher, Regular shuttles are provided between the accommodation and SkiTube.

The resort sits on picturesque land overlooking the Snowy Mountains, with the lake being the centrepiece. The resort offers lots of activities such as a day spa, gym, sauna, swimming pool, bush walking, par-3 golf course, and archery; so there’s plenty to do if you want some time off from skiing or snowboarding.

Jindabyne Accommodation

Away from Thredbo and Lake Crackenback, the other option is to stay off-mountain in Jindabyne accommodation. The town of Jindabyne overlooks the vast expanse of Lake Jindabyne and is 34km east of Thredbo (about a 30-minute drive). It offers the advantage of slightly more affordable accommodation and the flexibility to also ski Perisher. Accommodation types include hotels, motels, cottages and apartments.

The Alpine Resort Motel offers a range of rooms, studios for up to 5-adults, and 2-bedroom apartments.

Camping

Camping seems to be growing in popularity, in part due to the sky-rocketing prices and demand associated with Thredbo accommodation. There is free camping at Thredbo Diggings and Ngarigo on the Alpine Way between the national park entrance and Thredbo. You have to book a spot and it’s often booked out during peak times. Otherwise there are caravan parks in Jindabyne, and you could be amazed that they’re also often booked out and it costs a veritable 'arm & a leg' for a site.
