Rude front desk staff

I stayed at Prince Hotel at Shigakogen in March 2024. Most of the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. But there was one front desk staff who was very rude to me when I requested her for help to change a restaurant reservation. I made a reservation at a restaurant for 4 people and wanted to change it to 5 people. As I do not speak Japanese, I politely asked this staff to help me call the restaurant and inform them of the change. They told me there is no need to make reservations at that restaurant (which was wrong as the restaurant staff told us that reservation was required). I told her we already made a reservation and just want her to help change the number of people from 4 to 5. She refused o help and told me to call the restaurant myself. I asked her if I could use the phone, she told me to use the phone in my room. And she was not busy at all (no other customer around at the time). Throughout the whole conversation, I had been polite as I know Japanese people are very polite and gentle. However, she was very rude which was very surprising to me considering Japanese culture. It seems to me perhaps she dislikes English speakers.
Other staff are very friendly.

Great Location & Very Comfortable

The Shiga Kogen Prince Hotel is a fabulous place to stay. The location is fantastic and the ski-in ski-out convenience is superb.

We stayed in a twin room in the East Wing. The room was really spacious and the beds were large and sooooo comfortable. The room provided awesome views of the ski area which was particularly tranquil in the evenings when the slopes were illuminated. They have an impressive “green strategy” whereby for every day that you don’t get your room fully serviced (ie sheets and towels changed) you get ¥2,000 worth of vouchers to spend at the bar or shop.

Even though the East Wing dining room is like a big hall, the ambience is still delightful because of the 270 degree views. The restaurant service is impressive, and the food pretty good, but it’s somewhat overpriced especially if you want a glass of wine. The children’s set menus are also rather pricy, so any families on a budget would be better placed for dinner at one of the other wings or in Ichinose.

Be aware that whilst the hotel as a whole has extensive facilities, each wing may only have some amenities, and a shuttle bus ride is required to access the others.

The lobby lounge area can be a rather social place to gather. For such deluxe accommodation, it was somewhat surprising that the lobby was very drab. The friendly reception staff added some spark, and one of the girls spoke a degree of English and almost bent over backwards to be of assistance. This was a huge plus for the hotel.

All in all, this is a great choice for accommodation at Shiga Kogen.
