Livigno Freeride Ski Tour

Skiing the Little Tibet of Europe, plus Santa Caterina & Bormio

Welcome to Livigno, a once well-kept secret! Less popular than the big resorts of the Dolomites or Valle d'Aosta, Livigno is nevertheless a prime destination for freeride skiing in the Italian Alps. With its 100km2 of wild territory perched between 1,800m and 2,900m altitude, Livigno is even nicknamed the “Little Tibet” of Europe because of its usually exceptional snow cover. In short, this little 'duty-free' enclave of the Italian Alps bordering Switzerland is an incredible playground for free-riders!

On this freeride ski trip, not only do you explore the fabulous snow & terrain of Livigno, but also the massive descents in Bormio, and the secret stashes of one of Powderhounds' favourites, Santa Caterina & surrounding peaks. Join a fixed-date tour through January to March as a single or group, or create a custom tour to suit your best dates & group size. Let's go ....

Guides & Group Size

All guides are fully certified mountain guides with extensive local ski & mountaineering experience. They are chosen for their sympathy & understanding of clients’ needs/wishes, plus their teaching and organisational skills. They stay tuned-in, work hand in hand, and make sure their working conditions are the best. The maximum number of guests per guide/tour group will be 7, but may be as low as 5, depending on conditions.

Technical & Personal Requirements*

Ski Ability & Gear

You should be at ease with skiing on all types of snow off the piste. The group will ski at a good pace all day long. Beware slopes may include short, steep sections. Skinning involved will be generally no more than 45min to 1hr per day, but one day it may be 2½hr. You are not expected to be a master of ski touring techniques!

All ski gear can be rented, but if you have your freeride ski gear including skins, please bring it. Avalanche safety gear is included in the tour price.

Fitness

Good physical condition is required, skinning or short ascents on foot will generally not exceed 45 min/day. You should be prepared to ski all day long at a good pace.

*Good to know: if you don't have the level required, the guide may ask you to leave if necessary for the well-being of the rest of the group. If in doubt, please do not hesitate to ask!

Ski Lifts

For reasons of possible modification of the program according to conditions, lift passes are not included in the price. You will be responsible for purchasing them during your stay. For the sake of flexibility during your stay, lift passes will be purchased locally, so that in the event of poor conditions at one of the resorts we can easily make transfers to get the right conditions where they are. You should budget up to €300 for ski lift passes, but the reality will likely be less than that.

Meeting Point(s) & Transport

The meeting point for the tour is at one of a number of locations:

  1. From France (Cervières or Briançon) early in the morning (from 6am).
  2. Turin Airport (TRN) (8am).
  3. Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) (10am).
  4. Directly at the hotel in Livigno (2.30pm).

Arrival in Livigno is expected in the early afternoon of the first day. If you're travelling by car, meet at the hotel meeting point, where you'll be able to leave your car for the entire trip. From the meeting point, all transport during the tour (other than the ski lifts) is included in the tour tariff. Azimut's minibus is used throughout the whole trip. Not only does this make the trip easier, but it also makes it more pleasant and open: the group can chat, sleep and listen to your own music! For more info on the day to day, see the Itinerary tab.

Itinerary for the Livigno Freeride Ski Trip

The Livigno Freeride tour starts and finishes at various meeting points & airports between France & the hotel at Livigno. A tour van is used for transport during the entire tour. A 3-star hotel in Livigno will be used for the 3-nights on the tour and comes with half-board meals included. The last 2-nights of the tour are in a 3-star hotel in Santa Caterina, which also includes breakfast & dinner.

Day 1: Arrival, Warm Up at Livigno

Departure from France (Cervières or Briançon) early in the morning. Option to join the group en route at Turin Airport (TRN) or Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), or directly at the hotel in Livigno. Lunch is on your own at a stopover during the transfer. Arrival in Livigno in the early afternoon, check-in at the hotel and preparation for a short ski outing at Livigno to check the equipment and get a first glimpse of the ski area. You will enjoy dinner: antipasti, primo, secondo, dolce... Italian-style menu! Quiet evening at the hotel.
Meal included: dinner

Day 2: Monte della Neve

Today's goal: Monte della Neve! In this sector, from the top of the ski lifts, it takes just 15 minutes on skins to reach the summit. The 360° panorama is incredible! From here, the skiing possibilities are immense! The east-facing slope gives access to itineraries leading down to the Trapelle valley, with a good 6-800m of vertical drop. A bus then takes you back to the resort. Once back at the summit, you can also switch to the west side, which offers downhill runs to Livigno. There are bus services back to the ski lifts. Everything is in place for a memorable run!
Meal included: breakfast & dinner

Day 3: Pizzo Cantone

From the Carosello gondola in Livigno, the famous Pizzo Cantone rises to 2,900m. Just 30min of skinning and the group have access to a superb spot with countless wild itineraries in the area! On a clear day, you'll have the chance to admire a magnificent panorama of the Bernina massif and its immense nearby glaciers. From there, if we put the skins back on, we'll be able to get another 800m to 900m of runs!
Meal included: breakfast & dinner

Day 4: Freeride in Livigno, Transfer to Santa Caterina

Breakfast before check-out, then it's off for another day of riding to discover the incredible potential offered by the Livigno area for free skiing. To end the session on a high note, we suggest finishing with a forest route in Val Fereira! After skiing, it's a good hour's transfer to reach the village of Santa Caterina (1,738 m). The road is picturesque, passing through the charming historic town of Bormio. Along the way, you will also pass through the small resort of Isolaccia (which offers some great freeriding opportunities! - we'll come back if you're lucky). Check-in at our hotel in Santa Caterina and dinner at the hotel.
Meal included: breakfast & dinner

Day 5: Monte Sobretta, Santa Caterina

Nestled at the end of the Valfurva valley, Santa Caterina (1.700m) is a typical village at the gateway to the Ortles massif and the Stelvio National Park. Here, it is the north face of the Creta Sobretta (2,900m) that attracts our attention: its wide gullies and couloirs open out onto vast snowfields... a skier's paradise! The summit of Mont Sobretta (3,296m) can be reached after a 2½hr ascent with skins. It's a bit of an effort, but well worth it, with no less than 1,800m of north-west-facing slopes, looking toward the backside of Bormio.
Meal included: breakfast & dinner

Day 6: Bormio Freeriding, Departure

On the Bormio heights, there's plenty to do between the famous “Canale di Camoscio” with its 1,500m vertical drop and the “Il Vallone” or “Posto degli Sciatori” itineraries, which offer long descents in a wild setting. Depending on snow conditions, we may also want to do a few runs in the small resort of Isolaccia, which also offers great freeride opportunities!
In the afternoon, transfer back to the same meeting points as on day 1. Arrival in Briançon at the end of the day.
Meal included: breakfast

Note: this itinerary is an example of a freeride and off-piste ski trip in the Livigno area. The guide may adjust certain itineraries and ski areas according to weather and snow conditions as well as participants' abilities. You are kindly asked to respect such decisions. Changes to accommodation may also occur, maintaining the identical standards, according to logistics and availabilities.
