Mitre Peak Cruises – Milford Sound A Milford Sound tour is an essential part of any holiday to Queenstown New Zealand. Head there with Mitre Peak Cruises who offer competitively priced tours to see the splendour of Milford Sound, a World Heritage area.

New Zealand is a spectacular country and Milford Sound is one of the scenic highlights of NZ, which gives you a bit of an indication of the beauty of Milford Sound. It’s been described as the 8th wonder of the world. The sound has untouched landscapes, rugged cliffs that jut out of the water, super deep waters, and plenty of wildlife.

Milford Sound has a different personality every day. Sometimes it’s teeming with thousands of waterfalls and other days the relative stillness is incredibly tranquil. Sometimes Mitre Peak sits out in the sun in all its glory, rising 1,692 metres up from the water, and other days it hides in amongst the clouds, giving Milford Sound more of an eerie but beautiful feel.

Queenstown to Milford Sound - Coach  A Milford Sound tour with Mitre Peak Cruises can start from Queenstown or Te Anau.

Queenstown accommodation bus pick-ups are at about 6:30am. You can enjoy the scenic drive around Lake Wakatipu or head back to sleep in the comfort of the coach. The bus does a quick stop in Te Anau for coffee or a spot of souvenir shopping (in case you wanted to buy some possum merino clothing or the like!).

The drive heads past latitude 45 degrees and there are brief stops at picturesque spots such as Mirror Lakes and Knob’s Flat. Another stop at the Chasm is essential, which involves a 5 minute walk to an amazing rock opening where thousands of litres of water squirt through. Along the way the driver provides humorous and informative narration. The last part of the drive is particularly spectacular with dense forests, dramatic steep snow-covered mountains, waterfalls and rivers. The coach trip finishes at the Milford marina.

Milford Sound Cruise - BoatThe boat cruise heads out to the Tasman Sea and takes about 2 hours. The boat has indoor seating and tables, or you can check out the views from the front deck or the upper deck which is partially undercover.

Enjoy the spectacular scenery: sheer rock faces; native forested mountains, some that are snow-covered in winter; the deep dark waters; and the waterfalls. The boat may drive under some waterfalls and drench anyone out on the front deck. Meanwhile the boat driver provides an informative commentary and spots the wildlife. You may stop alongside bottle-nosed dolphins that show off to the boat, seals, or Fiordland penguins that pop up on the shore for mating season.

Coach or Fly Back to Queenstown You can take the bus back to Queenstown, or alternatively there is the option of a flight back to Queenstown. Every seat in the small fixed wing planes is a window seat so you can fully appreciate the majesty of the region. The flight starts off over Milford Sound then travels beside the spectacular mountains, and finally heads across the gorgeous turquoise waters of Lake Wakitipu. The flight will rock your world – it is phenomenal!
