For Australians flying to/from New ZealandA couple of things to be aware of when flying to/from Australia (particularly for cheaper flights):

1. The number of stops. Many flights to Christchurch for example fly via Auckland. Many Sydney flights travel via Brisbane and visa versa and likewise many Melbourne flights go via Sydney and visa versa. If time is not an issue the this is probably not going to worry you however these flights can add hours (and in extreme cases nearly a whole day) of travel.
2. Some flights from Queenstown fly via Christchurch which result in an overnight at Christchurch which could icrease the cost of your flights substantially with taxi fares, accommodation & extra meals
3. Many budget airlines such as Jetstar and Virgin have very strict baggage policies. Assuming you are heading to New Zealand for a ski holiday, you will have to pack very lean for your  baggage to weigh under 20kg. In fact if you are carrying your skis / snowboard & boots as well as everything else, you might struggle to get under 25kg (I know we do and we travel with very few clothes). Make sure your flights aren't "seat only" or "Carry On Luggage Only" as it could be a very costly exercise at the ticket counter when you try and check in luggage.
