Explore Patagonia Overview

The Explore Patagonia Tour ventures 9 days deep into the heart of Argentina’s Patagonian Andes, skiing and snowboarding the slopes of Cerro Catedral, Cerro Bayo, La Hoya and Argentina’s newest cat-skiing operation Baguales Mountain Reserve. The tour is customizable for your group, but here's a taste of what's possible.

The tour begins and ends in the lakeside city of San Carlos de Bariloche, a world- class adventure based community with a plethora of superb restaurants, nightspots, craft breweries, and chocolatiers. Cerro Catedral, Argentina’s largest ski and snowboard resort, features thousands of acres of inbounds and hike to off-piste terrain, breathtaking lake and mountain vistas, spectacular granite spires, and a good dose of true Alps culture in the Andes.

A day trip along the shores of Lago Nahuel Haupi and Argentina’s first national park brings us to Villa la Angostura and Cerro Bayo, a small ski ‘boutique’ center with amazing backcountry access, magical forests and few crowds. Our adventure continues with a day at Baguales Mountain Reserve, a privately owned 14,000-hectare (yes that is 34,500 acres) snowy playground. The reserve is three times larger than the traditional ski centers and boasts a vertical drop of up to 3,000 feet (900 meters) The name Baguales is an Argentine word for a wild cow or horse that roams the hills and grasslands of Patagonia.

Next up is a road trip down the Ruta 40 for a stop in El Bolson enjoying its artisan market, signature brewery, and breathtaking mountain scenery. Continuing south we travel through Patagonian steppes and gaucho country to Esquel our gateway for 3 days of skiing and snowboarding at La Hoya, a true Argentine gem, offering a true mom & pop feel, endless backcountry opportunities and stunning views into Parque Nacional Alerces.

We spend our evenings sharing matte, malbecs, and mouth watering Argentine beef before returning to Bariloche for one more big night out and a final day on the slopes at Cerro Catedral if your schedule permits.

Itinerary

This tour starts in Bariloche, Argentina and ends in Bariloche, Argentina.

Day 1 - ARRIVAL IN BARILOCHE
Guests will need to arrange flights to San Carlos de Bariloche airport (BRC) from Buenos Aires. Here they are met by CASA guides and taken to your lakeside Bariloche accommodation. Tonight we have a trip orientation and welcome dinner at one of Bariloche’s local breweries. Early arrivals are welcome and CASA guides can assist with logistics.

Day 2 - SKI/RIDE CERRO CATEDRAL
We spend our first ski day at Cerro Catedral. This modern ski center with a distinctly European feel features over 3,000 acres of on piste terrain, extensive lift-accessed backcountry steeps, and some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable. The Powder Gods have been very good to us here. In the evenings we experience Bariloche’s lively nightlife and excellent eateries featuring local Patagonian trout, lamb and beef.

Day 3 - VILLA LA ANGOSTURA - CERRO BAYO
Today we road trip to the lakeside village of Villa la Angostura and the slopes of Cerro Bayo. This small town vibe, boutique ski center accesses lots of crowd-free powdery terrain. Located on the north shore of Lago Nahuel Huapi, across from Bariloche, Cerro Bayo features magnificent lake vistas and true Argentine charm. On the way home we stop at our favorite roadhouse parrilla restaurant for a true guacho culinary experience.

Day 4 - BAGUALES MOUNTAIN RESERVE
Argentina’s newest cat-skiing operation, Baguales Mountain Reserve boasts over 34,000 acres of powdery terrain and vertical descents up to 3000 feet. This privately owned reserve is one classy experience set in the wilds of the Patagonian Andes. Baguales is a pristine mountain playground just for us to indulge in.

Days 5 - TRAVEL to ESQUEL
Our journey south on Ruta 40 runs deep into Patagonia and its snow covered mountains, barren steppes, and endless pampas to Esquel, our gateway to La Hoya ski center. En route we stop in the artisan inspired town of El Bolson for lunch before continuing through this vast wind sculpted landscape known for its huge ranches, guacho culture and where Butch Cassidy roamed. We spend 4 nights in Esquel, Chubut’s capital city.

Day 6 - 8 - SKI/RIDE LA HOYA
Receiving some of the coldest and driest powder in the Patagonian Andes, plenty of big mountain riding, loads of terrain features and a genuine, laid back vibe make La Hoya a highly recommended Argentine visit. For 3 days we explore this snow jewel while enjoying it’s local Patagonian hospitality and dramatic wild scenery.

Day 9 - DEPARTURE DAY
Depending on your flight schedule you may have the opportunity for a final day on the slopes of Cerro Catedral. After breakfast CASA guides will arrange transportation to the airport or Cerro Catedral depending on guests departing flights from San Carlos de Bariloche.

Flights Guests must arrange flights to San Carlos de Bariloche airport which most commonly (and economically) come via from Buenos Aires.
