The hotel is just steps from the lake
Views from the restaurant
Views from our room
A nice spot to sip on a drink
It was difficult to leave
Various lodgings in Wanaka offer lake and mountain views, but I don’t think they can compete with the Lake Hawea Hotel when it comes to vistas. We sooo enjoyed the serenity of the place, and the intoxicating views just added to the peacefulness of our stay. We only stayed a few days but it felt like much longer because it seemed like we were really getting away from it all. As Lake Hawea is 15 minutes drive from downtown Wanaka, some may see it as a disadvantage that it takes a little longer to get to the ski resorts, however it was worth it to be in this spectacular setting and away from the growing number of tourists in central Wanaka.

We stayed in a large renovated family room with a split king bed downstairs and a large balcony. The first night, a storm was in full force and it was so cosy in the room listening to the wind whistling outside. The next morning the storm had broken, and the amazing views revealed themselves. What a view! And it still felt like we had privacy in the room whilst simultaneously being able to take in the views. It was a really spacious room downstairs (plus there was upstairs) and really comfortable. There was a tiny little bit of noise from the neighbours, but this was to be expected for an older building.

The restaurant and adjacent lounge bar are an absolute highlight of the Lake Hawea Hotel! Obviously there’s the amazing views across the lake, and with 2 back to back fireplaces, comfie sofas, and lovely décor, the ambience was just perfect. Outside there was a lovely balcony for even better views, but as it was the thick of winter, it was a little chilly for that. We thought it might be disadvantageous being a drive away from Wanaka and its many restaurants, but we very happily dined at the hotel restaurant each night because it was that good! The food choices were amazing and everyone was raving about the lamb shoulder (a 2 person meal). The continental breakfast was very nice and included artisan bread, cereal, cheeses, yoghurt and pastries.

Other pros were that there was unlimited wifi, unlike so many other NZ hotels where they give you half a GB (!!), and the staff were incredibly friendly. We can highly recommend the Lake Hawea Hotel. This boutique hotel is a bit of a gem.
