Mallin Alto Sled Access Backcountry Tours

Mallin Alto near Bariloche in Patagonia Argentina offers backcountry sled skiing in a beautiful setting. Mallin Alto (pronounced Majin Alto) provides a wildly unique ski or snowboard adventure, fresh tracks, and an opportunity to get far far away from the hubbub of Bariloche and Cerro Catedral.

Despite its proximity to Bariloche, you’ll feel like you couldn’t be further away from it all. Sled skiing packages are for 2, 3 or 4 days and nights. All packages include lodging with full board and alcoholic beverages. See itineraries here>>

The lodging is delightfully rustic and definitely part of the adventure. Lodging may include dome tents or mountain huts. Service levels are very attentive with high staff to guest ratios, and some of the staff speak English (including the guides).

Bariloche Sled Skiing

Your ski or snowboarding day/s will be filled with adventure & unique experiences. Access to the fabulous terrain is via snowmobiles and/or 4wd vehicles with tracks depending on the snow cover and conditions. The snow quality will dictate how your snowmobile driver will get you up the mountain: sitting behind the driver; riding alongside the driver; or getting towed behind with a rope. And the 4-wheeler is ideal for conditions when there are a few rocks on the upper ridges or the snow is a little soft, or for those who want to save more energy for riding down the mountain.

Mallin Alto sled skiing and snowboarding is for hardcore escapade enthusiasts. You’ll have to leave all stress behind and have a very open mind to adventure. Princesses need not apply!

If this looks of interest or you have any questions, you can inquire here>>

Where is Mallin Alto?

The base of the mountain is located only 23 km south from San Carlos de Bariloche (home to Cerro Catedral Ski Resort) in Patagonia Argentina, but it’s a world away!

The staff will pick you up from Bariloche airport or your Bariloche hotel. The initial part of the trip is in a 4WD vehicle. After passing the land owner’s little shack the real adventure begins as the vehicles head over little river crossings and plenty of other fun bumpy 4WDing challenges. The staff drive to the snowline and then you’ll be transported up to the top of the mountain to the refugio on a snowmobile or 4-wheeler (so pack lightly!). The trip can take anywhere from 2 hours up to 3:30 hours depending on conditions and a whole variety of other elements. Getting to and from Mallin Alto is half the fun!

Skiing and Snowboarding

Ability & Terrain
You don't have to be an expert skier or boarder to join a Mallin Alto tour; you should be at minimum "strong intermediate".

The terrain is diverse offering something for everyone above this level. Much of the terrain consists of open bowls, and there are also gullies and rock features for those who like to launch it. The Mallin Alto ski and snowboard terrain also includes a little tree skiing.

Equipment
It is compulsory that you have a helmet, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe & backpack plus fat skis are highly recommended. Mallin Alto provides avalanche beacons. For other equipment you’ll need to BYO or arrange rentals in Bariloche. Oh and don't forget your bathing cozzie for the hot tub.

Guides
The backcountry guides at Mallin Alto are locals with IFMGA mountain guide qualifications. The guides take up to a maximum of 6 guests.

Here is a short video teaser of a couple of days at Mallin Alto.....

Lodging

The mountain hut is the primary lodging, which is located towards the top of the ranch at 1,700 metres. Here it affords the most remarkable mountainous views; from the wood fired hot tub, your deck chair on the deck; or the panoramic windows in the dome tents.

The mountain hut lodging is basic refugio style. It’s sort of like glamping and an incredibly unique experience!! The refugio consists of a hut construction attached to a dome tent, which incorporates the kitchen and dining communal area, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. There are sleeping quarters upstairs above the communal area and also in a separate room downstairs. The piece de resistance of the lodging is the adjacent dome tent which has a double bed and settee, its own wood fired heater, and offering the most phenomenal views out the window.

Full board is included in the packages. A chef prepares three meals a day plus snacks on the wood fired stove, and the fare is definitely a far cry from camping food. It’s definitely glamping food with surprisingly gourmet offerings considering that it is prepared and cooked way up in the mountains. Wine and beer is supplied.

There is no wifi at the hut so you’ll enjoy getting away from it all. Whilst there are radios communications there is no phone service, and very limited electricity supply. Snowshoes are available if you’d like to do a bit of exploring on foot.

There are also two fully equipped lodges located down at the entrance to the ranch which are also sometimes used for accommodation depending on availability at the mountain hut or adverse weather conditions.
