Wanaka Accommodation
Wanaka New Zealand is a chic and stylish place and this is reflected in the extraordinary standard of accommodation available in this small rural town. A characteristic that adds to the quality is that almost every accommodation around Wanaka has spectacular views of the lake and/or the mountains.
Wanaka offers a broad range of accommodation options to suit individuals' preferences and budgets, from cheap backpackers to luxury B&B's and resort style accommodation, as well as exclusive 5 star opulent retreats.
Wanaka Accommodation Locations
When booking accommodation in Wanaka you need to be aware that not all accommodation is within easy walking distance of the town centre. This is particularly true of some of the larger resorts, the Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort being one example. Thankfully, most of these resorts have shuttle bus services to compensate for their distance from town.
In general, most accommodation is no greater than a 5 minute drive from town. Wanaka does have a reasonably good taxi service, although like any small town, there can be pick-up delays during peak periods.
Accommodation areas surrounding the central township include Albert Town (6km NE of Wanaka – about 5 mins drive), north toward Beacon Point (which can take up to 10 mins depending on how far along the point the accommodation is), south towards Cardrona (generally no more than 5 mins by car) and east along the lake towards
Treble Cone (many of these properties are an easy 5-15 minute walk to and from
Wanaka along the lake front).
You can also stay in nearby Cardrona (about 25km / 20 mins drive), either at the
Cardrona Hotel in the Cardrona Village at the base of the mountain, or on-mountain at
Cardrona ski resort with only a very short walk to the ski lifts. See our

Wanaka Hotels and Resorts
Unlike
Queenstown, Lake Wanaka tends to be far more conservative regarding the size and extent of its hotels and resorts. A favourite is the
Grand Mercure Oakridge Resort which offers 4-star hotel and deluxe apartment accommodation.
Wanaka Backpackers
Good accommodation for backpackers can be found at
Holly's Backpackers or the
Purple Cow, a centrally located hostel.
Lake Wanaka Motels
Wanaka has a good variety of motels that are suited to the budget conscious. As an example, the
Alpine Motel Apartments, located only a few minutes walk to town has studio rooms and family apartments accommodating from 1 - 6 persons. The rooms are comfortable and have everything you need.
The
Bella Vista Motel is in the heart of town and offers fully serviced motel units. Prices are from $145 per night.
Wanaka Bed & Breakfast Lodges
In Wanaka, lodges are somewhat different to the definition of a “lodge” that you might find elsewhere in NZ. Typically in Wanaka, lodges are luxurious bed and breakfast establishments that convey the quintessential Wanaka lifestyle – upmarket and classy yet tranquil. Bed and breakfast accommodation is a way of life in Wanaka so there are many, many options to choose from. Examples of luxurious lodge accommodation include the
Mountain Range Lodge, the

Wanaka Apartment Accommodation
