Hintertux Glacier Ski Resort Austria
Hintertux Glacier is Austria's only 365 day a year ski resort (and lets face it, only one of a few across the world). Being able to ski with the assistance of lifts all year could be a blessing or a curse. After skiing here, we will assume it is a blessing. In winter Hintertux Glacier has a ski-able vertical of 1750m, enough to satisfy the hardiest ski freaks. For the Powderhound, an expansive off-piste, reliable snowfall, and when the weather is feral, access to nearby Mayrhofen
and other Zillertal ski resorts, Hintertux Glacier is a very attractive destination.
Hintertux Glacier Skiing And Snowboarding Terrain
Hintertux Glacier has an excellent range of high alpine terrain to suit all levels of skier except rank beginners and small children. The terrain is suitable for snowboarders, with the caveat that you will need to be able to ride T bar surface lifts on the glacier sections of the resort. Long and wide groomed pistes, some challenging off piste routes, an excellent new valley run and ‘fun slope’ provide ample challenge and entertainment.

Hintertux Glacier Snow and Weather
Hintertux Glacier’s location, high altitude and northerly aspect guarantee excellent snow depth and quality, especially above 2000m. Snow making ensures high traffic areas and the new Schwarze valley run is well covered whilst mother nature sorts out the rest. With no trees, the mountain is very exposed in poor weather, but in sunshine is absolutely glorious.

Interlinked with Zillertaler SuperSki
The Hintertux Glacier ski area has an interlinked lift pass with all of the ski resorts in the Ziller (and Tuxer) valley via the Zillertaler SuperSkiPass. The pass is for 2 days or more and allows unfettered access to the nearby ski areas of Mayrhofen
, Zillertal Arena and Fϋgen-Kaltenbach. Anyone skiing for more than one day at Hintertux should get a Zillertaler SuperSkiPass as it provides the best value and diversity of skiing options.
Nearby Ski Resorts
In addition to the Zillertal ski areas, a feast of Austrian ski resorts are within 2 hours of Mayrhofen. To the west they include the 9 ski resorts of Innsbruck’s Olympia SkiWorld (i.e. Stubai Glacier
). East they include Kitzbϋhel
, SkiCircus Saalbach
and Zell am See
Hintertux Glacier Accommodation
There are some serious choices to be made when skiing the Hintertux Glacier ski resort. Do you stay in nearby Mayrhofen, a larger town with its lively après scene, the smaller town of Tux further up the valley, or near the base of the Hintertux lifts.
If planning on skiing Hintertux Glacier for several days, it is best to avoid the valley bus rides up from Mayrhofen and Tux and stay near the lift base at Hintertux where some excellent accommodation awaits.
Four exceptional hotels, all with spas and ski in convenience from the excellent new Schwarze valley run, worthy of consideration are:
Der Rindererhof Hotel
– located next to the base of the lifts.
Hotel Gletscher & Spa Neuhintertux
– located across from the base of the lifts.
Kinder & Gletscherhotel Hintertuxerhof
– located 150m from the lifts.
Hotel Berghof Crystal Spa & Sports
– located 1 km from the lifts.
Hintertux Accommodation Listings – options for lodging only.
The resort base area and the nearby hamlet of Hintertux have a range of full service hotels and facilities that cover most eventualities. Each hotel has quality restaurants and bars, small markets, ski rentals, clothing and other equipment.
The best après in the Tux valley is right across from the lift base in the Hohenhaus Tenne – a classic barn conversion. Any services not available at Hintertux are a short bus ride away at Tux or Mayrhofen.
