Grands Montets Ski Resort France
Les Grands Montets ski resort is the best ski area in Chamonix. Exceptional skiable vertical, famous pistes & superb glacier skiing has given the Grand Montets its well-earned reputation.
Les Grands Montets Skiing & Snowboarding Terrain
The Grand Montets ski resort is the largest and most popular in the Chamonix valley, covering an expansive area above the village of Argentière, 8km up the valley from
Chamonix. Its 2000m of skiable vertical puts it firmly into an exclusive group of worldwide ski resorts. See the Grands Montets ski trail map
here.
Les Grands Montets is split into three major zones: the lower mountain below treeline between Argentière village (1252m) & the main mountain station of Lognan (1972m); mixed alpine terrain for all abilities below Bochard (2765m); & steeper alpine offerings (including the Argentiere glacier) below the Grands Montets (3275m).
From the tops of Bochard or Grands Montets, super long and exciting high alpine descents are now yours for the taking, culminating in opportunities for tree skiing in the bottom third of the resort. Your legs are guaranteed to get a really solid work-out.
Whilst this ski resort is predominantly an advanced mountain with an abundance of steep terrain to challenge even the most extreme skier, 3 chairlifts serve numerous beginner trails above the treeline.
Grands Montets Ski Lifts
Grands Montets is serviced by 8 main lifts (2 gondolas, 2 cable cars*, 4 chairs). There are two lifts from Argentière village: a gondola to the easy piste trails from Plan Joran; and a cable car to Lognan. At Lognan there is quick access to the Bochard gondola, Herse chair (to 2600m) and the Grands Montets cable car; all of which get skiers straight to the steeps. The Marmottons & Tabe chairs provide the access to the beginner trails below Plan Joran.
*Note - A fire in early Autumn 2018 has impacted the cable car between Argentiere & Lognan. The resort will still be functional, utilising ski lifts via Plan Joran, but the upper cable car may well be out of action for the entire season.
Grands Montets Ski Lift Passes
A strange quirk of the ski area is that the Chamonix Le Pass covers all lifts at Grands Montets except the cable car leading to the top. A Mont Blanc Unlimited Pass gives access to all lifts.
Snow & Weather
The Grand Montets is also renowned for its exceptional snow quality thanks to its north facing aspect & high altitude. Most of the ski terrain is above the treeline over 1900m elevation. The good snow conditions continue until early May, making it a paradise for skiers and board riders.
