Wanaka is a good sized tourist town so there are plenty of facilities and services to support a ski holiday.
Wanaka Ski Hire and Snowboard Rental
Wanaka has more ski and snowboard shops than you can poke a stick at, so rates for ski hire and snowboard rental are pretty competitive. Most shops offer standard rental equipment as well as performance gear. Many of the shops also hire powder skis if you’re lucky enough to be going
heli skiing.
Outside Sports (Dunmore Street opposite the New World supermarket) and Racers Edge (99 & 103 Ardmore St) are all good rental operations. Outside Sport’s rental rates are pretty inexpensive whilst Racers Edge is a little more expensive, but they have the relative quality you’d expect for the prices. Racers Edge also offers the ultimate in convenience because when it comes time to return your equipment. You can just drive down the laneway and pass your equipment to them via a hole in the wall.
Base rentals also offer snowboard and ski hire, but if you’re after powder skis they only offer a small range.
If you want really cheap snowboard and ski hire in Wanaka, head to Rocket Rentals (cnr Brownston & Helwick Street).
The ski fields rent gear which is worthwhile pursuing if you are planning on riding at only one mountain whilst in Wanaka. On-mountain ski hire is more expensive than in town, but it has the advantage of not having to haul your gear up the mountain each day, and the flexibility to change gear during the day if necessary.
Facilities for Children
Lots of the hotels can organise child care and some of the large accommodation resorts have kids’ play areas.
Cardrona ski resort has fantastic child care options. Conversely
Treble Cone has very limited child care. It is only for 3 to 6 year olds and for a maximum of 2 hours.
