Oulx (Sauze d'Oulx)

Oulx Ski Resort Italy

There is some wonderful skiing at Oulx (or more accurately Sauze d'Oulx). The old town of Oulx (pronounced 'ohlz' - sort of!) is a treat to stay in. Tree skiing and general off-piste is excellent and freshies can be had days after the last snowfall. Snow quality is excellent as all the resort is above 1500m and snowfall in this region is reliable.

Sauze d'Oulx ski resort's lift and piste links to the broader Via Lattea give a huge amount of scope to explore. The daily lift pass price for Oulx and all the Italian ViaLattea skiing of €37 (17-18 price) is exceptional value by world standards and easily the best value in Western Europe. No self respecting Powderhound will regret a mid week trip to Oulx,.

Oulx (Sauze d'Oulx) Skiing and Snowboarding

The skiing and snowboarding at Oulx, particularly in the off piste, is exceptional. Piste trails are mainly intermediate and beginner areas are lacking., but it is the tree skiing and high alpine bowls that make the Oulx ski resort a stand out.

Ski lifts at Sauze d'Oulx are evenly split between chairs and surface tows. The lift infrastructure is generally quite dated. Sadly, or perhaps thankfully, some of the best alpine terrain is only accessible via the surface tows (particularly on Moncrons). Lift queues at these lifts are horrendous on weekends and peak periods. Some poorly designed piste choke-points and lift exits also let the mountain down.

For more information and ratings see the Skiing & Snowboarding Oulx (Sauze d’Oulx) page.

Oulx Snow and Weather

The Oulx ski slopes are beautifully situated with a predominantly northerly aspect above 1500m elevation which maintains snow quality throughout the season. Snow making augments mother nature on the main piste trails, guaranteeing skiing from December to April. Late march and April are alleged to be wonderful for spring powder.

Where is Oulx, Italy?

Oulx is in the vast Piedmont region, conveniently located in the Val di Susa, 79km west of Turin in Italy. Gateway international airports include Turin, Milan, Lyon and surprisingly, because of the direct train to Oulx, Paris and Geneva.

Oulx is not just the Sauze d’Oulx gateway town, but the entire Via Lattea’s as well. It is only one hour by car from Turin via the E70 motorway.

Oulx also has a major train and bus station with direct links to all parts of the ViaLattea ski region and nearby Briancon in France (part of the excellent Serre Chevalier ski resort).

Oulx is on the main TGV train line that runs between Paris and Turin (at least 3 trains per day).  It is 1hr 12min by train from Turin's Porta Nuova station (trains every hour) and around 5hr from Paris and less from Lyon. To book the cheapest train tickets, click the banner below.

From Oulx to the ski resort base at Sauze d’Oulx, regular buses and taxis are available from the station or in town. Buses run every 30min and travel time is 15min.

For more detailed information see our Travel to Oulx (Sauze d’Oulx) page.

Nearby Ski Resorts

The Oulx train and bus station provides easy links by train to the nearby ski resort of Bardonecchia (12min train ride, leaves every hour) and a huge number of Maurienne valley ski resorts in France via the gare (station) in Modane. South of Oulx and the Via Lattea via bus through Montgenevre is the vast Serre Chevalier ski resort.

Via Lattea Accommodation

Accommodation at Oulx ski resort can be separated into several distinct localities. Below the ski resort and not connected by lifts, the town of Oulx has a new town near the railway station, plus a charming cobble stoned old town further up the hill. Up the winding road to the ski resort at Sauze d'Oulx the road becomes lined with a variety of hotels, apartments and chalets.

The ski resort base area is separated into the lower Jouvenceaux, connected to the piste by the quad chair of the same name, and at the top of the road, Sauze d’Oulx proper. Great après can be had at the La Fountaine at the bottom of the quad chair in Jouvenceaux.

At the resort village of Sauze d’Oulx, the high rise hotels and apartment blocks spread around and down from the Clotes chairlift. Sauze d'Oulx isn't the most inspired place but it is convenient and has all one requires for an extended stay. The Oulx ski resort area is replete with apartments but lacking in high end 5 star lodgings. More options are at nearby Sestriere.

For detailed information on the best places to stay, see the Oulx Hotels, Apartments, Chalets & Guesthouses page.
