Accommodation

Snowbird village only has four hotels with a total of 882 rooms. The buildings are solidly made of concrete to withstand the risks within the avalanche-prone canyon, so the exteriors have more of an emphasis on functionality rather than attractiveness. All four lodgings have great amenities and are incredibly conveniently located near the ski lifts, but they won’t suit the budget conscious with prices starting from about $US300 per night.

More reasonably priced accommodation can be found in Salt Lake City and suburbs, or the other option is to stay “next door” at Alta ski resort.

Snowbird Hotels & Lodging The Cliff Lodge is ski-in ski-out and is a well known hotel that is somewhat like The Titanic. Obviously it won’t sink, but it’s colossal and has all the luxurious trimmings including a day spa, outdoor heated swimming pool, hot tubs, fine dining, and heated boot lockers in every room. The multi-storey atrium is decked out with oriental rugs that are a bit OTT. The rooms and suites all have spectacular views, and the tariffs have a price tag that you would expect for such luxury (if not a bit higher!).

The Lodge at Snowbird, The Inn at Snowbird, and Iron Blosam Lodge all offer condos and studio rooms at lower rates than Cliff Lodge, but still don’t expect any bargains. They are not as chic as The Cliff, but are very comfortable and have amenities such as swimming pools and hot tubs. All are just a short walk to the lifts.

Accommodation at Alta Alta accommodation consists of five Alta lodge options spread across the base areas. The lodges are all a charming experience rather than just a place to lay your head. Prices are more reasonable than Snowbird, but still not inexpensive considering the gourmet food that is generally included in all the accommodation packages. The Powderhounds pick would be the delightful Alta Peruvian Lodge. There are shuttle buses between Alta and Snowbird, or you can ski between the inter-linked resorts.

This place has great food, a hopping bar, a heated outdoor pool, ski shop & once you stay here, you’ll be hooked for life. The Peruvian is definitely an experience, not just a place to lay your head.

Salt Lake City Accommodation Snowbird is in close proximity to Salt Lake City (SLC), so many visitors choose to stay downtown or in the surrounding suburbs in hotels, motels, hostels and bed and breakfasts. Salt Lake City hotels are significantly cheaper and provides the advantages of more options for dining, nightlife and shopping.

Those without a car can catch public transport that is cheap and easy. Sometimes on a weekend powder day, the traffic can be horrendous, but otherwise it is a quick and easy drive. The road up the Little Cottonwood Canyon is tight and very avalanche-prone, so those staying in SLC take the risk of road closures that may only be temporary or last all day. Those staying at Snowbird pray for days when the road is closed and they can go “country clubbing” and enjoy a powder day without all the SLC skiers around.
