Shin Furano Prince Hotel

Shin Furano Prince Hotel

The Shin Furano Prince Hotel is Furano's deluxe hotel option and is ideal for couples and families with a small child.

Where is the Shin Furano Prince Hotel?

The hotel is located ski-in/ski-out on the Furano Zone side of the mountain.  It is about a 10 minute taxi ride from downtown Furano and JR Furano Station (20 minutes by bus) and (45km) 1 hour by bus from Asahikawa Airport.

Rooms

All rooms have TV (with pay satellite TV), telephone, a small fridge, electric kettle, safe, robes, hair dryer and private bathrooms with a toilet with bidet (which is a real highlight in Japanese culture!).
There are 3 room types available (smoking or non-smoking) ideal for 2 - 3 guests per room:
  • Twin Room - has 2 twin western beds plus a sofa bed (max 3 guests)
  • Double Room - has a king bed (max 2 guests)
  • Suite Rooms - have 2 x double beds in a separate bedroom to the living area (max 2 guests)
Complimentary toiletries and free wired internet is also available in all room types.

Facilities

The hotel has a Japanese bath house (onsen) with indoor and outdoor hot springs and sauna.

There is a full service health spa for those wanting a little pampering or a massage plus ski storage, a gift shop and coin operated laundry.

The hotel also offers ski school bookings and ski rentals.

Restaurants & Bars

There are  a number of restaurants and cafes to cater to most people's eating desires including 6 restaurants (one is a buffet), 2 cafes, and a bakery.

The hotel bar is only open from 5-11 pm so this restricts apres a little. So is you are after a bit of party time, this may not be the place for you!

Dated and no character

Absolute beginner

We stayed at the Shin Furano Prince hotel Feb 2023 for 7 nights. Like a lot of the large resort style hotels in Japan, it is dated and the rooms in desperate need of refurbishment. The bathroom is tiny, so tiny that the basin area is outside the bathroom, in the hotel room itself.
Not many options for lunch or dinner, and super expensive. Dining options on the mountain (in the Furano ski zone) are limited to the very busy ramen place or a cafe at the top of the mountain which is no good for beginners.
There is limited bus service to Furano town, with either 25 minutes or 2.5 hours for the return bus.
The hotel doesn’t really have a friendly vibe. We spent a week prior at Hoshino Tomamu Resort, and the services there e.g. regular and free shuttle buses between the two ski areas, a wide variety of dining options, a cafe with free wine and coffee, made guests feel they were being looked after. Prince hotel misses the mark on this.
However, the location is excellent for ski in/ski out, and due to the size of the hotel probably the best option for availability.

A Bit Sterile but Great Location

13/05/2015
This review is not based on personal experience but as a result of reading a huge number of reviews to get the general idea of the pros and cons

PROS
- Great location - ideal for couple with a child
- Rooms are generously sized by Japanese standards
- Good selection of restaurants & cuisine (both Japanese & western)
- Food is reasonably priced given the resort style property
- Staff are friendly

CONS
- Location is quite remote from downtown Furano (30 mins by bus) plus the bus service is infrequent (not free) making it difficult to go into town for a meal
- The hotel has a sterile feel to it
- No wifi in rooms (only LAN connection) and free wifi in lobby is very poor
- Insufficient hotel lifts to cater for peak traffic
- Bar only opens at 5pm so no apres
- Limited vegetarian or special needs food choices
- Negligible English speaking staff

Many of these cons are typical of many (most) large Japanese ski resort hotels. But you are there to ski anyway!!
