Baguales Mountain Reserve Argentina (NOT OPERATING in 2017)
Cat skiing at the Baguales Mountain Reserve in Argentina brings together the serenity of being in a remote and pristine backcountry area of Patagonia, with the delights of skiing or snowboarding gorgeous untouched powder. It’s hard to know whether a powder hound will salivate more over the phenomenal Andes backdrop or over the seemingly endless number of powder lines.
And having a snowcat
for the uphill mode of transport means that you can save time and energy for heading downhill in pursuit of those delicious deep powder turns. (If you’re not quite sure what cat skiing is, check out our overview of snowcat skiing
). More recently, Baguales Mountain Reserve added heli skiing
to its repertoire so now you can bang-out even more turns in a day!
Baguales Cat Skiing or Heli Skiing packages can be combined with some skiing at Cerro Catedral
near Bariloche, but it’s probably best to start your vacation at Catedral. The snow quality at Reservas Baguales is renowned for being drier and superior to that of Catedral, and after the amazing experience of snowcat or heli skiing skiing, you may never be able to return to the crowds and chopped up snow at the ski resort!
“Baguales” means feral or wild, and whilst wild horses may have once roamed the lands, there is definitely nothing feral about staying at the lodge. The main Baguales Lodge offers upscale accommodation in large double bedrooms with private ensuite. The lodge has sophisticated furniture, luxury rugs, a billiards table, and a large open fireplace as the centre-piece for après banter. There are also two self-contained cabins.
Dinner usually consists of a very hearty meal that features meat (no surprise there) or fish that can be accompanied with some renowned Argentinian wine.

Where is Baguales Cat Skiing Located?
The remote Baguales Mountain Reserve is located in the southern part of the Nahuel Huapi National Park in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Reservas Baguales is located 30 miles south of the city of San Carlos de Bariloche
, a drive that takes a little over an hour and offers some of the most amazing postcard scenery in Patagonia. See our Bariloche travel
page for information on getting to Bariloche.
For day cat skiing, you’ll need to drive there yourself in a 4WD vehicle (car rentals
are available in Bariloche or at the Bariloche Airport) and the last part of the drive is an adventure in itself with some river crossings. For the last part of the trip, the staff will transport you via snowcat or snowmobile up to the lodge.
For cat skiing packages that include an overnight stay at the lodge, transfers from the Bariloche Airport or a Bariloche hotel are included.
Alternatively, transport is provided if you’re on a multi-resort tour such as the Argentina Snow Adventure
, Explore Patagonia
, or the Patagonia Powder Off-Piste
The Baguales privately owned reserve offers a playground of about 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres), which is roughly 8.5 times the size of Cerro Catedral ski resort. And instead of sharing the terrain with thousands and thousands of punters, you only have to share the Baguales heaven with 27 others.
Many of the runs are not particularly long whilst some lines offer descents of up to 3,000 vertical feet. Depending on conditions and the speed of the group, you can expect 8-14 runs and up to 4,500 to 5,000 metres (14,760 to 16,400 feet) of vertical joy each day.
The minimum ability requirement is intermediate. In addition to open mellow slopes for intermediates, Baguales also has a variety of terrain for stronger skiers and boarders which is largely in the alpine.
More Reasons to Cat Ski with Baguales
Baguales offers a unique opportunity to ski in the wilderness of Patagonia without having to rough it, whilst rivaling some of the high quality Canadian cat skiing experiences.
Powderhounds are yet to review Baguales however here are some reviews from other guests>>
