FWA (Fernie Wilderness Adventures) Powder Catskiing

Powder hounds may go barking mad if they don’t get a good fix of fresh powder. A great cure for this problem is to go BC cat skiing, although a possible side effect for powder hounds is a drooling problem when they get a sniff of all that fresh powder!

Fernie Wilderness Adventures (FWA) Powder Cat Skiing is a great adjunct to a ski holiday at Fernie. Riding at the ski resort is enjoyable, but fresh tracks are far from guaranteed. Go cat skiing with FWA to make sure you get a good dose of virgin snow.

FWA Packages

FWA has single day packages, so it’s possible to sample cat skiing for one day, or if you’re addicted to freshies you can do a multi-day trip. There is the flexibility to stay at your choice of Fernie accommodation, either in town or at the Fernie ski resort village. Alternatively you can get away from it all and stay at the FWA lodge which includes culinary feasts and a relaxing soak in the rustic hot tub.

If you have any questions or want to make a query about availability, you can make a booking request here.

Where is FWA Powder Cat Skiing Located?

Fernie Wilderness Adventures is located about 20 minutes from Fernie, away from major civilisation in the southeast corner of BC Canada. The area is part of the Powder Highway, a region renowned for abundant dry powder.

The Calgary International Airport is 3.5 hours from Fernie and there are many shuttle options to get to Fernie. Cranbrook airport (Canadian Rockies airport) is 1.25 hours away, and Kalispell in Montana is 2 hours away.

If you don’t have a car, return transfers from Fernie to the lodge can be provided for a small fee.

Snowcat Skiing Terrain

The Fernie Wilderness Adventures cat skiing package includes approximately 8 to 10 runs per day which equates to about 10,000 to 12,000 vertical feet (3,048-3,658 metres). The size of the powder hound playground is 3,000 acres (1,214 hectares), with terrain that includes steep ridges, gladed trees and open meadows. The highlights of the terrain are the many interesting features such as mini half-pipes, pillows, and rocks and short cliff bands to huck off.

The terrain is rather technical in places so as a minimum, riders need to be very strong intermediate powder skiers or boarders.

Fernie Wilderness Adventures Cat Skiing Review

“I love big dumps” and I’d heard that Fernie Wilderness Adventures cat skiing was a great operation where I could continue my love affair with powder snow, so on went the fat skis to give you the skinny on this cat ski operation.

The review covers different aspects of their operation and you can determine if FWA is likely to align with your priorities. That being said, the cat skiing is lots of fun so you’ll have an awesome time regardless of your priorities!

Pros

  • FWA has some really interesting terrain and is great for freestylers or anyone else who likes to huck. It’s like one big backcountry terrain park!
  • They send out a professional photographer to capture some classic powder moments. Looking at the photos on a big screen at the end of the day adds to the festive après session, and if you want to purchase the photos, the price is very reasonable.
  • Some cat ski operations require a minimum of 6-8 guests before they’ll operate, but at FWA they can take small groups out in the Weazel if they don’t have many guests booked in. This mini cat fits only 4 guests and one guide, and offers a faster powder skiing experience.
  • The lodge and cat skiing staff are super friendly. You can’t help but have a good time, and that’s before you even sample the powder.
Cons
  • Fernie Wilderness Adventures has the smallest terrain of the BC cat skiing operators. With 2-3 snowcats out each day, fresh tracks are not necessarily guaranteed unless it’s recently snowed.
  • With a long cat ride up from the lodge in the morning (about 45 minutes) and down in the afternoon (30 minutes), there’s less time available to ski or board. FWA offers 8-10 runs per day and approximately 10,000-12,000 vertical feet of skiing or boarding, which is less than some other Canada cat ski companies. (See our BC cat ski comparison regarding the size of different operations and the daily vertical feet on offer.)

Powder Snow
The powder is generally very good, but as is common in the Fernie area, the snow quality can be highly variable. At times the powder is classically Rocky Mountain dry and fluffy. However sometimes it’s raining in town and the snow can be a little wet (which was our experience).

In relation to quantity, FWA receives an average of 8.7 metres of snowfall per season which is very respectable. However considering that a few BC cat skiing operations receive 15-18 metres of snow a season, FWA doesn’t get top marks for the snorkel-factor.
Overall Terrain
Fernie Wilderness Adventures have really interesting terrain features. Between short cliff bands, mini pipes, and lots of fluffy pillows, freestyling terrain park junkies will have an absolute ball at FWA. The video above shows some of the fun to be had! Unfortunately the interesting terrain only lasts for about a half to two-thirds of the vertical, and then the mellow run-outs or trails are relatively dull.

The main limitation of the terrain at FWA is the size, which then has a negative impact on all other terrain ratings below. This is the smallest cat skiing terrain in BC at only 3,000 acres (1,214 hectares). It’s only a fraction bigger than Fernie Alpine Resort and there are 11 ski resorts in Canada that are bigger than FWA. Obviously there’s a much higher probability of skiing fresh tracks at FWA than a ski resort, but with up to 2 to 3 cats out each day, fresh tracks are not necessarily guaranteed at FWA.
Alpine Terrain
Only a very small amount of the terrain could be classified as “alpine”.
Tree Skiing
In amongst the trees and powder pillows is where all the merriment can be had. The spacing of the trees is really tight in places, so the skiing and boarding can be rather technical. However there’s diversity in the spacing and there are lots of openings amongst the trees. The top sections have a bit of pitch but are not super steep, and the runs mellow out significantly further down.

Strong Intermediate Terrain

not rated
Not rated
Advanced Terrain
FWA is very well suited to advanced riders considering the pitch and varied spacing of trees. The rocks and terrain features are just an added bonus. The cliff bands are only short, so those who wish to avoid them can easily go around. FWA would score full marks for advanced terrain if the tenure was much larger.
Expert & Extreme Terrain
There is no super steep terrain or chutes, but for those who like to huck, the terrain is nirvana.
Guiding
The guides we had were pretty good; very relaxed whilst maintaining a good level of professionalism. They knew the intricacies of their terrain (probably because it is quite small) and the exact locations of particular cliffs or jumps. One of the guides was even considerate enough to stomp down the landings for some jumps. The only criticism would be that the guiding was a little loose at times, and they needed prompting multiple times to provide directions for those who wanted to avoid the cliffs.
Snowcat
One of the snowcats had a wide-arse cabin with seating for 14 persons in two rows. One row faced forwards and the other backwards, but the backwards facing seats were well designed such that you didn’t slip onto the laps of guests on the other side (damn!). The side door arrangement made it a little hard to get in and out of the cat, but otherwise the comfort factors were pretty good.

FWA has multiple snowcats, so they have good contingency plans in the event of mechanical failure. FWA also has the advantage of being able to provide small group cat skiing in the “Weazel” mini-cat.
Avalanche Mitigation Strategies
FWA’s website indicates a moderate emphasis on safety and avalanche mitigation strategies, but this wasn’t as evident in practice. Any measures undertaken by the guides were not discussed or made obvious with guests, and on-site slope testing was not conducted. A few of the guides have relevant qualifications.
Safety Briefing
A safety briefing was provided in the snowcat with written prompts to ensure all aspects of mountain safety were covered. This was reasonably effective as the briefing was comprehensive. However the practical component of the briefing was very brief indeed, with little emphasis on what to do once a victim had been located. Another limitation was the use of old fashioned transponders that require a slow grid search, so it was difficult for day skiers with little practical experience to master their use in a short space of time.
Frills
FWA has some very good frills. They send out a professional photographer each day and during après they show the entertaining photos over snacks and beers. A CD of the photos is very inexpensive relative to some other operations - only $60 for one person and $40 for each additional person.

The snacks provided during the day are not particularly gourmet, but absolutely more than adequate. Lunch however could be improved by selecting sandwich fillings that don’t go soggy.
Accommodation
The wilderness lodge is very cosy with a homely atmosphere and incredibly friendly hosts. This is not a luxurious lodge as seen with some other Canada cat skiing operations, but rather it is rustic with a capital “R”. The generator is only on for a few hours, the bunk beds are wobbly, the hot water is temperamental, and the hot tub is wood fired, but these quaint traits make the wilderness lodge experience more genuine, and you definitely know you’re getting away from it all.
Value for Money
A single day of cat skiing with FWA is not the most expensive in Canada, but it’s towards the upper end (see our Canada cat skiing cost comparison). To add to the cost it’s an additional $45 per day to rent fat skis, and multiple loonies to get a transfer from town to the lodge. Value for money is also potentially lessened with a smaller ski vertical per day than other operations.

Fernie Wilderness Adventures is more expensive than day skiing with its neighbours, although these operations only run day skiing on selected days or as a standby arrangement, so it’s not possible to really compare rates.

If you can be flexible with dates, FWA offers some cheap last minute packages. Join their facebook page or “Dumps and Deals”. You too can then love big dumps!

Notes Regarding Review

The review is largely based on our experience, but also on discussions with staff, former guests, and information available on their website. Our review has some limitations as it’s not possible to ski every run and in all possible snow and weather conditions, and the terrain skied on a particular day is dependent on the ability of the group. Every guide is somewhat different and we acknowledge that everyone’s experience will be slightly different. The ratings are from our perspective only.

To compare to other operators see our Canada cat skiing ratings. This also outlines some of the factors involved in the decision-making.

Bucket list pow day

After 30 years of snowboarding, two seasons in north America ( Whistler & Snowbird ) I was able to finally get a day of cat skiing in on our recent trip to Canada. My Son & I had an awesome day in waist to chest deep pow. Conditions were a little sketchy, 30cm overnight with rising temps and some wind which closed
some terrain. The guides started us on pretty easy terrain and got progressively steeper during the day.
Being so deep it was high intermediate to advanced boarding and some tight tree sections leading to more open areas. Massive tree wells to be avoided but the guides had us confident and hooting was heard all day.
Definitely recommend for anyone wanting to give cat skiing a go.

Best ski day I’ve ever had!!!! I will admit I was a bit nervous about whether I could ski this terrain. Our guide Mike was so good about insuring safety, and the tail Kevin gave me lots of great tips.

I’ll be back next year.

I really appreciate skiing with you guys, thank you very much for such an amazing day,

Wow, what a trip, the staff at FWA were all excellent. The lodge is pretty basic but very clean and neat, the little hot tub out the back in the snow was cool too.
Food was top notch, just what we needed after an awesome day on the mountain. The snow though! The pow was deep, fresh and untouched, we really lucked out with the weather. Not super steep or aggressive terrain, but a lot of fun. Some nice lines and drop-offs. Trees all pretty nicely graded too.
5 stars!

It was 3 weeks since the last snow fall and we (group of 7 advanced skiers and snowboarders) were a bit nervous on the snow quality, but FWA delivered way beyond expectations. They found the snow, fresh lines in on ridges and in forests, all around the mountain. The guides and driver are very nice, helpful and professional. Awesome experience !

Great Guides and tons of fun

David
30/01/2017
We got there after 2 weeks of no snow, yet the guides were fantastic and found relatively un-tracked snow for almost every run all three days. The terrain skied is more or less tailored to the lowest level skier in the cat. We skied tons of blueish runs a few amazing blacks. Due to the the lack of snow, every run every day was either moderately or heavily treed.
The cat rides are between 20 and 40 minutes between runs when the powder is sparse and you will get 8 to 10 runs. If you want super steep you will have to book the entire cat.
Overall, a very cool place to ski and a little tougher to snowboard as most of the runs end on flat terrain.
Intermediate skiers will enjoy this taste of powder

My son and I had an amazing three days of Cat skiing with your operation. Communication with your office in setting up arrangements and coordinating getting to the lodge (as we came from Wasa) were excellent.
Guides were fantastic and were very considerate of each of the skiers abilities and interests. Guides were very good at finding un-tracked snow each run and each day. Hazards were identified by guides each run to prevent injury ...this was excellent.
Lodge is fairly basic but is fine for the amount of time spent there.
Soup at the end of the day was a nice touch.
Photographers were excellent, but the prices were a little high for purchase of digital files. If the prices were a bit lower, we would have considered purchasing many more pics.
Cats were great. Cat drivers excellent.

Staying in the Park Place hotel, FWA have an ideal position with the office in the reception so you can check daily what is happening weather and trip wise. Sadly we picked the worst year for snow it would seem for a decade (typical), but FWA were really helpful in trying to find the best day for the conditions and weather, for us and the rest of the group.

The staff and guides were really helpful and good fun, thorough in their professionalism and made the best out of a bad situation (snow wise). We had some fun runs and was superb to get out onto their private area and see the wilderness. Truly would have been epic had the snow dumped.

We will be back again (fingers crossed for the chapmagne snow we all hear about) and I would not hesitate to use FWA again, great terrain and great people. Many thanks.

Temp -4
20 cm of new snow over night with morning flurries.

Excellent crew. Thanks to Brian, Aaron and Matt for a great time. Great group of riders as well. Conditions could not have been better. Snow was great with varying depths. Good enough for a number of the natural drops. Nothing intimidating for the above average rider. Good number of runs. Managed 22 over the course of 2 days.

FWA

Bob Lagesa FWA Rock Garden The owners of Fernie Wilderness Adventure a Snow cat skiing operation in Fernie, British Columbia are all about having fun. FWA sits in the Lizard Mountain Range which is known for getting huge dumps of snow. With an annual snowfall of 400 inches you know you’re in for a special treat and it’s only a 3hour drive from Spokane International Airport.

FWA’s large tenure has plenty of terrain variations, open bowls, really good tree skiing, and then my favorite, The Rock Garden.

FWA has Three Bombardier Snow cats which hold comfortably up to 12 riders each. The cats are stocked with plenty of drinks and snacks and a healthy lunch making each cat ride a relaxing experience as you get ride to the next gladed tree run. There’s no going hungry with this operation.

FWA has quite an established road system that will put you over some great untracked and their longtime guides know the little honey holes and with all the different aspects, they can find good stuff for a long time even in a dry spell. It makes a huge difference when your guides know where to bring you in certain conditions. Typically at FWA you can get 10-12,000 vertical of untouched powder in a typical day and there’s both Daytrips and Multi Day Packages. The overnight accommodations come complete with a hearty breakfast and dinner.

The FWA lodge sits just a few miles outside of Fernie and it holds up to 12 guests for overnight excursions. It’s equipped with all of the modern conveniences of home including a wood fired hot tub.

FWA Provides: All day, Every Day

Steven Walker
20/03/2011
When I rode with FWA, it had been 2 weeks since the last snowfall. The ski hill was ICE, and the feel around town was glum. I decided to try FWA for a day because the few people I talked to the day before couldn't believe how awesome it still was. I thought I was out of luck because it was late and the office was closed, but there was a sign on the door to call anytime and I did....I called the owner on his cellphone, at 1030pm at night, and booked a seat for the next day.

When I woke up at 630 I was skeptical. No fresh snow on my windshield- sh*t- but I had to try anyways. I arrived at the office and was greeted by who else but the owner, Kim. (I have been cat-boarding at 4 other operations and have yet to meet one of the other owners). The secretary organized my bill while I chatted with Kim and two guides Brian and Matt.

After waiting a couple minutes for the rest of the guests to arrive we loaded up to the lodge. A nice 15 minute drive and we were in the middle of nowhere. The lodge was cozy and offered a warm area to suit up for the day. After a waiver signing we went outside to load up, and were introduced to our cat-driver. WHAT! Kim? again? Does this guy do everything? I learned later that Kim drives the odd day when they are shorthanded, or if he is tired of fixing things and running around.

The crew was a mixed-bag, a few Swedes, a couple Brits, and some people from Calgary. By the time we got to the first run we were all acquainted and had buddied up for the day. Let's do this.

The first two runs were "warm up runs" as Brian called it, just to see the groups' abilities and speed. They may have been warm up runs but it was the first powder I had in a month, and they were awesome.

A few more runs and everyone is hooting and hollering as we continue with lap after lap of powder. I was amazed, not once did we re-ski a run, and not once did I feel like I was skiing run-down snow. Brian and Matt were awesome guides, they knew the area like the back of their hands. Brian even talked me into trying the fishing side of things in the summer, I still plan on doing that.

The day ended with a slideshow and a hot bowl of soup at the lodge. Unreal! I will be back, and I recommend FWA to everyone I talk to about skiing.

I had no idea what to expect since I had never been cat skiing before, yet FWA still managed to exceed even my wildest thoughts about what this experience would be like. The lodge was rustic, but still had this incredibly cozy feeling to it. It was either the wood burning stove or the delicious home made soup that was served, post adventure.

The staff was knowledgeable and friendly, and I felt more than safe with them around. They made sure we knew everything about the beacons we were using, and to stay close, have a buddy, and be aware of everything that can happen in the back country. All the guides seem to know the terrain like the back of their hands, making note of every little dip, jump, cliff, hazard. They knew it all, which made me feel even more comfortable.

The snow was amazing... from the pillowy drops to completely opening up in a field of powder and taking the biggest turns and slashes of my life. It seriously felt like gliding on air. This experience was unforgettable, and I can't wait to get out there again!

Awesome Terrain Variety and Deep POW

Jamie Grimes

Been there 3 times now. Love the variety of terrain from small to big cliff drops, great tree skiing and lots of flowy open gullies and features galore. I've been lucky and always caught 40 to 50 cm new snow every time.

Staff are very friendly and like to let you ride versus being too constrictive compared to other places I've been. They are all long time staff and know the mountain so well that they never mis-guess where the best fresh lines will be.

I highly recommend it for the riding but staying at the wood cabin lodge is epic. Walk out the front door and you're already on the mountain and you literally walk into your Cat out the front door. Wood burning hot tub, home cooked meals, photo slide show of your rides afterwards while eating an amazing warm soup and bread and bevies - I'll be back for sure considering the price is competitive to other comparable places.

A Big Backcountry Terrain Park

16/07/2010
FWA is the day cat skiing specialist in the Fernie area and the cat skiing makes a great adjunct to a ski holiday at Fernie Alpine Resort. Or if you cat ski for multiple days, the opportunity to stay at the rustic lodge is a great way to get away from it all.

Even though the terrain is small relative to other cat skiing operations, the terrain is impressive because it’s like one big backcountry terrain park with quarter pipes, powder pillows, and lumps and jumps. It’s perfect for a hucking good time.

Other pros: FWA can operate small groups; and the staff are really friendly.

Potential cons: minimal alpine terrain; fresh tracks are not necessarily guaranteed unless it’s recently snowed due to the terrain size; and long cat rides up and down which may cut into skiing time.
