The Company

Alaska Snowboard Guides (ASG) was formed to provide a "superior heli operation" where clients would leave their Alaskan heli skiing adventure satisfied with the amount of skiing they achieved. It is owned and operated by some of the best heli ski and snowboard guides in the business.

Many of ASG guests elect to rent an RV and park at their base camp. This option offers all the amenities of home with epic views of Thompson Pass and you’ll wake up each morning right next to the helipad. You may want to do some grocery shopping in Anchorage, as supplies are substantially cheaper there than in Valdez.

It may seem like a long drive but the trip to Valdez is considered one of the most beautiful drives in the world. You will travel on the dry Northern side of the Chugach Mountain Range. Looking to the south you will be amazed by the rugged beauty of Northern Chugach and its shallow continental snowpack.

RVs can be rented at Clippership Motorhome Rentals for around US$1,000 per week depending on the size of the motorhome.

Generally the package is 3 full days of skiing (about 8 runs per day) but variable weather conditions may dictate more days with less runs. You have 7 days to complete your personal 4 hours of heli flying time (approx 24 runs). Runs can be anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 vertical feet.

  • 4 HOURS personal heli flight-time (which equates to about 24 runs)
  • Runs of 2,000 to 5,000 vertical feet
  • Priority seating over daily and walk-up bookings
  • Some of the highest snowfalls on the planet
  • Terrain diversity with insane 50+ degree steeps to 30 degree cruisy runs
  • Small and flexible group organization of max 4 groups of 5 people per helicopter
  • Glamping-style lodging in RVs
  • Spectacular scenic drive from Anchorage to Valdez

Typical Itinerary

The ASG season takes place in the months of March and April. Each week begins Saturday afternoon and ends on Saturday afternoon (depending on weather).

Arrival Day (Saturday)

You will drive up from Anchorage to Valdez and on to the helicopter staging area (approximately 5 hours) along one of the most scenic drives on the planet. That evening, it is likely you will meet with the guides and sign waivers and commence a safety briefing (avalanche safety & beacon training video).

Day 2 (Sunday)

In the morning if the conditions are right for flying, you will be provided with an on-snow helicopter safety briefing (the order and timing of the safety / heli briefing may change subject to weather).

Heliskiing/boarding will then commence weather permitting.

Day 3 - 6 (Monday to Friday)

Each morning your guides will brief you on the weather and likelihood of flying that day.  If the conditions are right, you will head sky-ward and be landing for your first run in 3 - 6 mins.

Ultimate terrain selection each day is determined by the guides based on avalanche assessment, weather and group ability; ensuring your safety is the number one priority.

Lunch is served in the mountains each day you fly.

Skiing continues throughout the afternoon to 6:00 pm in March and as late as 7:45 pm in April depending on weather.

An average day is around 30,000 feet of vertical (9,000 metres) and as high as 50, 000 feet. This highly depends on weather, snow conditions and the speed/fitness of the group.

No fly day (and extra) optional activities

In the event of a "no fly day", other activities available in the area include ice climbing, ski touring/split boarding, snowmobiling, glacier tours, wildlife and boat tours, shooting,  intro to avalanche safety course, Aaire level 1 avalanche class, snow mobile skiing, ocean fishing, cross-country skiing/snow shoeing and/or a trip to the Valdez museum (or you can just take it easy for the day and/or hit one of the local bars about 6 miles down the road!)

Day 8 – Saturday (Departure Day)

On the last day (subject to weather), it is your final opportunity to get your powder fix. Skiing/boarding will finish around 3:00 pm.

Oh and don't forget to write a review on Powderhounds.com here whilst you are still excited to share your experience with the global ski community.

Lodging & Meals

The classic package doesn't include any accommodation, meals or transport. The idea is for guests to rent a RV in Anchorage and drive to the base-camp (heli-pad) area where they will camp for the 7 days of the heli skiing package!

RVs come in a variety of shapes and sizes (sleeping from 4 to 8 guests) and are relatively inexpensive (per person) to rent if you have a group of people. They have their own bathroom with shower and toilet, self-cater cooking facilities and dining area. They are well heated and the deluxe models have DVD/TV. ASGs recommend Clippership RV Rentals.

The base camp area has several yurts where you can hang out in front of a warm fire, watch TV/movies, connect to the free wifi and cook on the grill.

ASG Terms & Conditions

Purchasing Travel Insurance

Almost all travel insurance covers cancellations, medical expenses, evacuations, losses or delays, and 24/7 assistance. There is absolutely no reason not to purchase a policy given the extensive coverage and affordability.

While there are many similar options available, our current recommendation is TravelGuard which allows you to choose the coverages you want/need.

What does Travel Insurance cover?

Cancelled Trips

Due to the high overhead associated with heli skiing we do not offer any refunds for cancelations. Travel insurance will reimburse you this cost including any expenses you incurred as part of planning the trip (e.g. airfare cancelation / change fees).

Travel insurance further covers cancelation of your trip due to sickness, injury or death, flight cancelations, jury duty and if you are laid-off or required to work. It will also cover the lost portion of your week if for any reason you have to return home due to an emergency.

Emergency Evacuation
If something happens to you while in the field, there is no other way to obtain medical assistance other than using the helicopter which will be very, very expensive especially if we need to fly you directly to the Valdez Hospital. If you need to be transported to Anchorage, or even worse back to the lower 48 in a medically equipped aircraft this cost can easily exceeded $50,000 or more.

Injury / Sickness
If you are visiting us from another country, your heath insurance at home may not cover any injury or sickness that could occur during your trip. Travel insurance will.

Lost luggage, delayed luggage & delayed flights
If your arrival is delayed and you miss a fly day with us, we cannot refund you for this lost day and the flight time your group uses will be deducted from your package.

ASG can’t emphasize this point enough. There is no reason not to buy Travel Insurance for your Alaska Heli trip!
