About Hakuba Mominoki Hotel

The Mominoki Hotel is a great pick for a Hakuba Hotel, providing either western or Japanese style rooms. It’s only 5 minutes walk to the nearest lifts and offers 87 rooms, on-site hot springs (onsen), restaurants and bars.

Where is the Mominoki Hotel?

The Mominoki Hotel is centrally located in the Lower Wadano Village of Hakuba Japan. The hotel is located 5 minutes walk to or from the Kokusai lift at the Happo One Ski Resort. This base area of Happo has the child care and English speaking ski school.

If you don’t want to walk to the Kokusai area, there are very regular buses (the bus stop is 30 seconds from the front of the hotel) to get to the Happo-One slopes. This bus stop also provides direct access to Hakuba 47, Goryu, and Iwatake ski resorts, and Cortina and Tsugaike via the Happo Information Centre. In the evening the Genki-Go buses provide transport to Happo Village, Echoland and downtown Hakuba.

The Mominoki Hotel is located right next to the Evergreen backcountry ski tour centre, and the large Rhythm shop that offers ski and snowboard rentals.

The Mominoki Hotel is in close proximity to several restaurants and bars.

There are a variety of room types available at the Mominoki Hotel in varying standards, ideal for 2 - 8 guests per room.

Rooms have either western-style beds or Japanese-style with futons on tatami and all western-style rooms have private en-suite bathrooms whereas the Japanese-style rooms have a private toilet & basin and use the Japanese bathhouse to bathe.

All rooms have wifi, TV with English satellite channels, telephone, a small fridge, tea/coffee making, and hair dryer.

Rooms are serviced daily and those with ensuites have a shower and bath tub. Non-smoking rooms are available.

The hotel has an indoor Japanese bath house (onsen), plus an outdoor hot spring (rotenburo), both with natural spring water.

There is also a nice communal lounge area with fireplace, a sauna, games room, ski storage and a ski rental shop, souvenir shop, drink vending machines, coin-launderette, and free onsite parking.

Other services include in-house massage, free hotel shuttle to/from train station and bus terminal, and 24 hour front desk.

Restaurants & Bars

The hotel has a delightful coffee shop/lounge which is ideal if you want a place to hang out with family and friends.

There is also a Pub bistro, izakaya, and Japanese Wagyu Steak House in the building next door. The Mominoki Hotel's Pub is a very popular hangout and provides live music regularly.

A buffet breakfast is usually included in packages and a very generous buffet dinner is also available.

A Good All Rounder

The Mominoki Hotel is an excellent choice for a Hakuba Hotel. It only has a couple of minor limitations and we really enjoyed our stayed there. This hotel is in a good location and delivers good value for money.

We stayed in the old wing where our room was somewhat basic and out of sync with many other parts of the hotel which were rather upscale. The room was of an average size and had twin beds, which is typical of hotels in Japan. The room had a bolt-on bathroom (which is also typical of a Japanese hotel) but it was a little tighter than the average.

The Mominoki is well located for those that want to sample multiple Hakuba resorts. It’s an easy walk to Happo One or it’s right outside a bus stop that goes into town and to other resorts. The proximity to the Rhythm ski shop, Evergreen Tours and various restaurants was also a bonus. The location would also be good for those wanting ski school lessons because it’s on the shuttle route for their pick ups.

The indoor and outdoor hot springs were spectacular and 100% natural; very clean and a great place to end and/or or start the day. The bar area was cosy with its open fire and baby grand piano and was a great place to chill out. The wifi worked very well too.

The facilities were comprehensive but there were just a few little oddities that weren’t well thought out for a hotel at a ski resort. Firstly it was hard to dry clothing in the room as there was only an overhead heater and no way to dry boots (except with a hair dryer), no hooks and only one tiny little rail in the bathroom. The drying room near reception was a joke. It was miniature and they turned the heater off in the early evening (and left it off overnight) when you most wanted your clothes to dry. They also had the ski storage outside. I know Japan is a relatively safe place but this seemed a little weird.

The breakfast buffet selection was huge and covered both western and Japanese food, but they didn’t change the fare on offer each day so after a few days it felt like "ground hog day". We also had a buffet dinner there one night, which was of fantastic quality.

Other than a little miscommunication regarding our pick up from the Happo Information Centre, the service was very good. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and there were a good number of English speaking staff making communication easy.
