Close to the Slopes, Nice Onsen

POWDERHOUNDS.COM16/01/2018
Hotel De L’aile was built especially for one of the European ski teams for the Olympics in 1998. Not a lot has probably changed since the Olympics and it looked a little old fashioned (actually it looks much older) but we didn’t need glamorous décor so it was more than adequate as a comfortable and functional hotel for us. Despite trying to cater for the European Olympic skiers, it’s still a pretty typical Japanese hotel. We laughed as we overheard some westerners complaining about a few things regarding the hotel: that you had to nude up in front of others in the onsen; no muesli and cereal for breakfast; the staff didn’t have perfect English; the bathroom was small; the pillows were hard; and the beds were a bit hard. We wondered why they wanted to come to Japan to experience western culture.

Hotel De Laile had a great location for ease of access to the Happo One Ski Resort. We could pretty much ski in to the hotel and it was just a brief pole/push to the slopes. There were a handful of restaurants nearby but we typically walked down to The Pub area or down to Happo or caught the night bus. This wasn’t a major problem, but it wasn’t as ideally suited to accessing restaurants and bars as other areas.

Our room was decent sized by Japanese standards. The bathroom was tiny (which is very common in Japan) but we mostly bathed in the lovely onsen baths anyway, which was a fantastic way to finish the ski day. The lovely staff were also a highlight of our stay.
