The Japanese Ski Safari

The Japan ski safari is a once in a life time experience, combining the lightest powder in the world, freshly delivered as it snows everyday, and a real taste of Japanese culture staying in a typical inn and a luxury hotel, eating delicious food and bathing in the "onsens" (natural hot springs) spread over the entire country.

This ski safari across the Hokkaido island has been optimised in two great loops :

  • The northern loop will be composed of 4 different ski resorts including Furano, Asahidake, Tokachidake and Tomamu. By staying in Furano, it allows the group to radiate from there and select the best spot of the day, depending on the snow and weather conditions. The driving won’t exceed more than an hour to reach the selected spot.
  • The southern loop will take the group to 2 ski resorts: one is the famous Niseko; and the other is Rusutsu, another powder paradise.
This tour is for mixed groups therefore you can join in as a solo traveller, couple/small group or you can book it as a private group tour. Ski-tourers as well as split-boarders are welcome.

Skiing Terrain

Most of the terrain in Japan is relatively mellow (20 to 30 degrees) with some short pitches that are steeper. Much of the skiing is amongst well-spaced trees where the powder will be deep and untracked.

This is a backcountry touring trip and whilst lifts will be used to gain initial vertical in some cases, it is mostly about hiking to find the perfect un-tracked line every time!

Your guides will adapt the daily program according to the group's skills and mood.

Highlights
  • Skiing the deepest, driest snow on the planet
  • Hiking active volcanoes & skiing back down them
  • Soaking in natural hot springs (onsens)
  • Indulging in Japanese cuisine, beer & sake

Skier/Boarder AbilityThis tour caters to strong intermediate to expert skiers. You should as a minimum be able to ski a steep black run with short controlled turns, plus you should have some prior experience off-piste and in deep powder.

This tour incorporates traversing, hiking and skinning (sometimes in conjunction with lifts) to get to the best untracked snow, therefore you should have a very good level of fitness.

Group Equipment (Provided)SAFETY KIT : Including shovel, avalanche probe and avalanche beeper: must be worn by each participant at all times off-piste. If you have your own, please bring it. Indicate whether or not on booking form.

SAFETY AND RESCUE EQUIPMENT: Each guide will have all that is necessary for the safety of the group in their rucksack : radio or mobile phone, first aid kit, tools for repair, space blanket, rope, shovel, and avalanche probe. The guide may ask you to carry such equipment in your rucksack. If you are an experienced mountaineer with your own equipment, bring it with you.

What Should You Bring? WIDE TOURING SKIS: 9V guides use and recommend wide skis. There is so much snow in Hokkaido, the best ski equipment to bring are fat skis (100 mm width or more under the foot) with low tech bindings. Diamir or Marker touring bindings are fine.

BAGGAGE: Please travel light! As you will be staying in 2 different places during the Safari, make sure that your baggage is practical, quickly packed and easy to carry. It will be transported from one hotel to the next, but there are no "porters" to and from the rooms. Please, only one bag per person to be transported and no loose belongings likely to get lost.

SMALL RUCKSACK for daily necessities. 25 litres will be a good choice. Inside your pack you should have:

  • 1 x goggles with 2 spare lenses
  • 2 x scarf or neck-warmer to protect against wind, cold, sun or powder
  • 1 x spare gloves or mittens
  • Sunscreen for lips and face (high protection)
  • Pocket knife for picnics
  • Foil blanket in case of accident (or even if chair lift breakdowns)
  • Beverages, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, muësli bars
  • Shovel and probe - if you have your own, bring them
  • Optional: camera, video or binoculars, swiss army knife
  • Puffy jacket, compressed at the bottom of the rucksack

CLOTHING: Most of your time will be spent in ski wear. Remember to bring very warm clothes, you will get cold and humid, and it's often snowing hard in Hokkaido. If you have room in your already heavy bag, it may be comfortable to have two skiing outfits. If properly equipped, you'll enjoy the skiing more, whatever the weather. We ski in all conditions.

Itinerary

This tour starts with a meet & greet in Chitose International Airport (CTS) in Hokkaido. Ideally your flight will arrive in the morning of the first day or by 2 pm at the latest (otherwise it may be better to arrive the evening before and stay a night at a nearby airport hotel).

At the end of the trip, you will be driven to Chitose Airport for a flight out that evening (after 9 pm on that day). If you are unable to get a flight that evening after 9 pm, it will be necessary to spend the evening at a nearby hotel with a flight the next day and the guides will have a farewell dinner with you. In the morning you would use a free hotel shuttle to get to the airport.

DAY 1: Arrival at Sapporo Airport
Welcome meeting at Sapporo Chitose Airport and jump in the minivan to transfer directly to the North Country Inn in Furano. Visit the ski resort and get your first glimpse of Japanese culture!

Night in the North Country Inn in Furano.

DAY 2: FURANO
Furano is great spot. Many itineraries are easy to access and tree skiing is at is best in Furano. A short skin takes us to the wonderland of snowghosts, an incredible natural feature.

Night in the North Country Inn in Furano.

DAY 3: TOKACHIDAKE
Right opposite Furano, Tokachidake is a fabulous spot for powder hunters and nature lovers.

Get your skins ready to discover the wild forest which has the joys of the legendary Hokkaido powder, and combines this with active volcanoes. After skiing this magnificent forest the group will soak in the natural hot springs in a lovely snow setting.

Night in the North Country Inn in Furano.

DAY 4: TOMAMU
This small ski resort has ideal terrain because the birch trees are perfectly spaced and distributed on the mountain. A short skin up opens up long runs down the river in perfect and untracked snow!

Night in the North Country Inn in Furano.

DAY 5: ASAHIDAKE
Asahidake is a very special place. Skiing through fumaroles emitting steam is not uncommon. It’s essentially a backcountry ski area that has the luxury of being serviced by a cable car. This is the highest mountain in Hokkaido so the snow is kept super cold. And unlike Niseko, Asahidake is not near the ocean, so the powder is very dry. If you love to earn your turns, you’ll be in powder heaven. If the weather allows, the group will skin to the top of the volcano and stand on the top of Hokkaido island at 2,291 metres high.

Night in the North Country Inn in Furano.

DAY 6: TRANSFER DAY

Along the stormy highway we drive with huge walls of snow. It is something really incredible since it seems to snow every single day on this island!! The van will arrive by 5pm at Niseko and you will drop your luggage at the hotel and go straight for an unforgettable night skiing session. Enjoy powder skiing and hot sake!

Night in Green Leaf Hotel at Niseko Village.

DAY 7: NISEKO - ANNUPURI
Niseko is probably the most famous Japanese resort amongst international skiers and boarders. For those that love powder, Niseko is the number one pick for a ski holiday because it seems to constantly snow, and the deep, deep powder is way too enticing. Niseko the snow factory is one big powder playground!

Night in Green Leaf Hotel at Niseko Village.

DAY 8: RUSUTSU
The highlight for powder riders is the fantastic fall line tree skiing that can be easily accessed straight off the lifts and with minimal traversing. A short walk take us to Mt Shiribetsu is the gateway to powder paradise !

Night in Green Leaf Hotel at Niseko Village.

DAY 9: NISEKO - HANAZONO
Back to the deep snow playground for one more unbelievable powder day in the most extensive ski area of Japan. After skiing you will be driven to Chitose Airport ETA 7 pm for your flight or to a nearby hotel if your flight is the next day.

*Programme subject to change, in order to make the best of prevailing weather and snow conditions.

The role of a guide or instructor is to reduce risks to a minimum. Therefore, any participant who does not respect the guide’s instructions, becomes entirely responsible for any accident he may subsequently cause or be involved in and will not be able to claim against the Safari 9V guides or organisers. Generally, “Safari 9V” cannot be held responsible for accidents which may occur during the trip, such as personal injury, loss of belongings, etc... unless professional failing can be proved.
