Tebay Lodge Ski Week Overview

The Tebay Lodge Ski Week includes six nights at the lodge, with five days of guided skiing. On three of these days we'll ski tour from the lodge, and on two of these days, we'll utilize the ski planes to access higher alpine terrain (with the option for additional plane days — see Details).

The trip starts with a morning hotel pickup in Anchorage. It's a scenic 4.5 hour drive to the tiny rural town of Chitna, Alaska, situated on the banks of the Copper River. From here it's a spectacular 15 minute ski plane flight to the lodge.

A typical day at Tebay starts with coffee and a hearty breakfast, as we discuss our options for the day. On any given day we might explore the expansive terrain behind the lodge, use snowmobiles to tow to drainages further down the lake, or load up the Super Cubs for a short flight to a high alpine glacier. After a full day out in these dramatic mountains, we head back to the comforts of the lodge for après-ski relaxation.

The prime ski season for the Wrangells is mid-March through to the end of April. This time of year is known for sunny days, cold temps, and high pressure. This is also when the best balance tends to exist between great snow conditions, good stability, and extended daylight hours — opening the doors for exploration.

Terrain Tebay Lodge sits on the banks of a 3 mile long chain of lakes, the Tebay Lakes, in the Eastern Chugach Mountains of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

While the lodge sits at an elevation of only 2000', altitudes take on a new meaning in Alaska, where you can literally ski to the ocean. Peaks in the immediate vicinity rise to 7000', with higher peaks a short flight away. Low altitude oxygen, high altitude terrain.

These mountains offer a wide variety of terrain for skiers of all interests. Perfect ski touring peaks, north facing glacier descents, steep couloirs, featured glacial moraines, and even some tree skiing — a rarity in Alaska.

One of the best features of Tebay, is low light terrain options. While weather days shut down many Alaskan skiing operations completely, no matter what the weather, you can always get out touring at Tebay.

Who Can Join This Tour? This tour is for advanced to expert skiers (and very fit & expert only split boarders) with extensive backcountry experience. You must be fit and have a great sense of adventure.

Join one of the fixed date tours as a solo skier, couple or small group or pull together your own group for a private custom tour (subject to availability).

Groups are a maximum of 8 guests with 2 guides.

Typical Itinerary

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE
Fly into Anchorage Int'l Airport. We recommend arriving one day prior to the start of the trip. There are numerous hotels in close proximity the airport.

DAY 1: Morning hotel pickup in Anchorage. It's about a four hour drive to the town of Chitna, Alaska. From here we load up the planes for a 15 min flight into the lodge. Get settled in, dinner and welcome orientation.

DAY 2: Brief companion rescue/mountain skills review, full day ski tour behind the lodge.

DAYS 3-6: Full days of ski touring in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, including two ski plane accessed days (flying from the lodge to higher/further terrain).

DAY 7: Morning flight back to Chitna, return to Anchorage. Outbound flights from Anchorage should be scheduled no earlier than 8pm on this evening.

Tebay Lodge

Built to a beautiful rustic modern standard, Tebay's guest accommodations are comprised of the main lodge, a warm cozy yurt, and a beautifully renovated original hunting cabin. The wood fired hot tub is stoked and ready for when you get back from a big day of ski touring. The warm sauna provides an excellent shower, and bathrooms consist of a washroom in the main lodge, and simple but nicely kept outhouse buildings.
