IWATE Powder Experience - UPDATED for 2020

The Iwate Powder Experience provides a great opportunity to get off the main tourist trail of Japanese ski resorts. Shizukuishi and Appi Kogen are still relatively unknown to foreigners and combined with huge falls of dry Japan powder, there is relatively little competition for fresh tracks.

This sample package for the Iwate Powder Experience can be customised from 2 nights or more to include any/all of the components mentioned in the inclusions & add-ons. This sample package combines resort skiing at Shizukuishi, Appi Kogen and a day of guided side country/backcountry skiing in the area, plus a 3-runs of guided snowcat access skiing at an old ski area at Shizukuishi.

The Iwate Powder Experience represents exceptional value considering the package also includes daily breakfast and most evening meals.

Group Type:

This is a mixed group tour meaning guests will be grouped with other guests to make up numbers for the tour. You can join a tour as a solo traveller or couple, however this tour requires a minimum of 2 participants for the backcountry skiing, and minimum of 3 participants for CAT tours to operate. Ideally you would have a group of 3 or more to guarantee the backcountry & cat skiing tours to operate. Larger private groups are also welcome to book a private tour with only their own group.

Ability:

This tour is ideal for advanced skiers and snowboarders with experience riding powder and backcountry but can be altered to suit less experienced riders with a minimum of strong intermediate ability, and good physical condition is a must as there will be a 2-3 hour hike upwards for the BC day-tour.

You don’t have to be a pro, you just need to have a sense of adventure and want to ride powder!

Guiding & Hosting:

The CAT tour will be fully guided with 2 guides per 9 participants. The guided back-country skiing will be somewhere in the Appi Kogen area. If your group is less than 9 members you may ski/ride with other guests.

While an attempt will be made to organise the most qualified guides with English ability for the tours, depending on availability, in some cases the guide at Appi Kogen might only have limited English. Please understand this is still a relatively untapped area for foreigners and one of the great reasons for visiting now.

Sample Itinerary

The follow itinerary is an example based on the sample pricing and can be customised from 2-nights / 3-days.

The tour commences and finishes at Morioka train station, Iwate.

Day 1 (Arrival Day & Ski Shizukuishi)

Meet at Morioka Station at 11am and take the bus to Shizukuishi Ski Resort for an afternoon of free skiing/boarding.

Day 2 (CAT Tour)

Enjoy 3 runs of guided CAT tour at Shizukuishi Ski Resort, end enjoy exploring the slopes in the afternoon.

Day 3 (Free Day in Morioka)

Today you will take a bus back to Morioka City and explore the many things the city has to offer.

Day 4 (Ski Time at Appi Kogen)

Today you will take a bus from Morioka Station to  Appi Kogen ski resort, and enjoy some free time to ski, or to relax in the hot spring at the hotel.

Day 5 (BC Tour near Appi)

Today you will enjoy some backcountry skiing near Appi Kogen  (2-3 hr hike up, total of 4-5 hour tour).

Day 6 (Ski at Appi and depart)

After spending the morning at ease, enjoying the slopes or doing an optional snow-shoe trekking tour (+additional cost, late Jan-mid Feb only), you will take the bus from the hotel at 4pm back to Morioka Station (arriving around 17:00).

Accommodation

Appi Kogen Accommodation

Accommodation at Appi Kogen will be at either Shirakaba no mori or Grand main building depending on availability at the time of booking.
Both properties are ski-in/ski-out and offer hotel-style accommodation with a large list of amenities.

Shizukushi Accommodation

Accommodation at Shizukuishi will be at the Shizukuishi Prince Hotel.

  • The guest rooms at the Shizukuishi Prince Hotel are western-style with private bathrooms with shower, bath, toilet & basin. The standard rooms have 2 single beds. Some rooms have been renovated and many rooms offer views of the mountains. Each room has a sofa, TV with satellite channels, a fridge and kettle.

Morioka Accommodation

Accommodation in Morioka will be at the Morioka Metropolitan Hotel, Morioka Route Inn, or similar hotel subject to availability.

  • Hotel Metropolitan Morioka - New Wing offers modern and spacious hotel rooms: single, twin, triple and king rooms; all with ensuite bathroom. 350m walk from the train station with lots of restaurants nearby. Very good buffet breakfast can be included.
  • Hotel Route-Inn Morioka Ekimae offers good value single and twin western rooms with bathroom (smoking or non-smoking). “Ekimae” means “in front of the station” & it’s only 150m from the east exit of Morioka train station. Breakfast buffet included.
  • Morioka Grand Hotel Annex offers decent sized western style hotel rooms with twin beds, a seating area, desk and bathroom. 1.km from train station & located in the izakaya district so lots of dining and bar options nearby, & 500m to Sakurayama Shrine. Continental breakfast.

Pricing and occupancy are based on shared twin rooms. This means you will be sharing a room with another person in the group, but yes you will have separate beds! If you are travelling alone and are uncomfortable being paired with someone else, please request a single room upgrade (subject to availability). Each room has its own toilet and shower.

Northern Iwate Travel Terms & Conditions

Currency:
All payments to Northern Iwate Travel are in Japanese Yen (JPY).

Bookings:
The Contract is not concluded at the time of subscription, and the Traveler shall submit an Application Form and Application Fee within the period as designated by us.

In cases where the Traveler fails to submit the Application Fee within the period specified we shall consider such a subscription as not having been received and treat it accordingly.

Deposit/Application Fee:
By making a payment on a booking you agree to Northern Iwate Travels booking conditions as listed in full on our website. A Traveler who wishes to subscribe for our Package Tour Contract shall fill in the necessary information on the Application Form and shall submit it to us together with the required Application Fee payable in the amount specified separately by us within the limit of 20% or less of the Tour Price.

Expenses incurred as a result of special arrangements made at the request of the Traveler shall be borne by the Traveler.

Tour Confirmation:
We shall promptly deliver to the Traveler, a document detailing the itinerary, contents of Tour Service, Tour Prices, and other conditions of the Tour, as well as matters concerning our responsibility with regards to the Tour, after the Tour Contract has been concluded. The scope of the Tour Service involving our responsibility in making arrangements and administering itineraries under the Package Tour Contract, shall be based on details stated in this document.

The Traveler shall pay to us, the amount of the Tour Price as specified in the Contract Document, on or before the date specified in the Contract Document, and prior to the starting date of the Tour.

Alterations:
In cases where unusual and unforeseen circumstances arise due to reasons beyond our control, including, but not limited to acts of God/providence, acts of war, civil commotion, suspension and/or closure of Tour Services such as transport and accommodation facilities, exercises and/or orders from government and other public agencies, the need to use transport services not based on our original transport plan, and such circumstances affect the safe and smooth implementation of the Tour, we may be required to change the itinerary contents of the Tour Service, and other contents of the Package Tour Contract by promptly informing and/or explaining to the Traveler beforehand, reasons for the nature of such circumstances being beyond our control, and the correlation between such circumstances and subsequent changes. This shall be the case except at the time of an emergency, where the Traveler is informed and/or receives an appropriate explanation after such changes have been made.

Change of Traveler:
A Traveler who has concluded a Package Tour Contract with us, may assign his/her status under said Contract to a third party, subject to our consent. In cases where the Traveler wishes to obtain our consent as provided for in preceding paragraph, said Traveler shall fill in the necessary information on a form as designated by us, and submit it with the handling fee of a designated amount, to us. The assignment of said status under the Contract, shall take effect when approved by us. After such approval, the third party who has acquired such status under the Tour Contract, shall inherit all rights and obligations concerning said Package Tour Contract as originally concluded by the Traveler.

Cancellation of the Contract by traveller:
The Traveler may, at any time, cancel the Package Tour Contract by paying to us the cancellation fee as specified by us. In cases where said Traveler wishes to cancel the Communication Contract, we shall accept and process payment of the cancellation fee by using the card of our Affiliated Company without obtaining said Traveler's signature on the designated voucher.

Cancellation fees as % of total trip cost:

  • 20+ days from date of travel = 20%
  • 7-20 days from date of travel = 30%
  • 1-6 days from date of travel = 40%
  • On start day = 50%
  • During trip or no show = 100%

As with all tours it is recommended that participants take out travel insurance to cover for cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances.

Our Right to Cancel the Contract:

We reserve the right to cancel the Package Tour Contract before the start of the Tour by explaining to the Traveler about the reason for the cancellation, in the following instances.

(1) In cases where it becomes known that the Traveler does not meet the conditions required of Tour participants, such as age, sex, qualifications, skills, etc., as specified by us beforehand.

(2) In cases where the Traveler is considered unable to participate in said Tour due to illness, the absence of a necessary aide/helper and/or other such causes.

(3) In cases where the Traveler is likely to create a nuisance for other Travelers and/or hinder smooth implementation of the Tour as a group.

(4) In cases where the Traveler requests extra burden in regards of the contents of the Contract beyond a reasonable extent.

(5) In cases where the number of Travelers participating in the Tour does not reach the minimum number of participants for the Tour as specified in the Contract Document.

(6) In cases where it is extremely likely that Tour conditions required for implementation of the Tour as described at the time of the conclusion of the Contract, such as the amount of snowfall necessary for a ski Tour, shall not come into being.

(7) In cases where unusual and unforeseen circumstances arise due to reasons beyond our control, including, but not limited to acts of God/providence, acts of war, civil commotion, suspension and/or closure of Tour Services such as transport and accommodation facilities, exercises and/or orders from government and other public agencies, and other such circumstances that affect the safe and smooth implementation of the Tour as scheduled according to the itinerary described in the Contract Document, or that have increased the potential of disabling the tour to an extreme extent.

(8) In cases where the Communication Contract has been concluded, and the Traveler is unable to settle in whole or in part, the liability related to his or her Tour Price, etc. as stipulated in the card membership rules of the Affiliated Company. Such reasons may be due to, but not limited to, the credit card as held by the Traveler in question, being invalid.
