Tohoku Freeride Week

  • Chase the big winter storms in the Tohoku region in Northern Honshu
  • You’re guaranteed to ride the best snow available every day with a flexible itinerary
  • Riding in a small group of 5 people keeps the group moving at a fast pace on a powder day
  • Staying in a small but vibrant Japanese city, you'll experience the real Japanese way of life
  • Get off the beaten path away from the tourists and ride boot to waist deep powder every day

Join a Tohoku Freeride Week and you’ll get to experience an area that is blessed with lots of snowfall, no crowds and very little western influence. Throughout the tour the guides will show you why the Tohoku region is one of their favourite places to ride in Japan.

Your base for this tour is Morioka City in a modern hotel with ensuite bathrooms. From here you can easily access many of the surrounding resorts. The terrain ranges from big mountain lines to undulating tree riding. The itinerary is kept flexible so your guides can find the best conditions and terrain on the day. Being off the beaten track, you will also experience real Japanese cuisine and hospitality.

What's a "Powder Hunter Tour"?

These are tours are all about chasing the big winter storms. By keeping the itinerary flexible your guide will assess the conditions and decide which is the best place to ride based on weather and snowfall. Your local Japanese guide who has a lifetime of experience riding in these areas as well as reading the conditions and terrain, will make sure you find the goods.  There are several great resorts within easy reach from the hotel base including Geto Kogen, Tazawako, Appi Kogen, Hachimantai, Shizukuishi & more. Each day the group will load up the 4WD vans and drive to the chosen destination for the day.

Small Groups

By limiting the group size to a maximum of 5 people per guide ensures you get the most out of your time with less time waiting around for the group to congregate, which means more time riding powder!!!!

Snow Conditions

Late January is the best time of year to experience skiing and snowboarding in Tohoku. What you can expect is light and dry snow, perfect for riding powder. Temps will be cold, with temperatures ranging from -1 to -10 degrees celsius. Most days you can expect to ride powder that’s anywhere from boot to waist deep. Even if there isn't fresh snow overnight, the cold temperatures and your guide's local knowledge will ensure you’ll ride powder even days after a storm.

Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo you won’t be alone. In fact the tour is perfect for solo travellers and you will be matched you up with someone to room with for the entire time. Not only are your guides with you on-mountain during the day, they keep the stoke going well into the night, so you’ll always have crew to hang out with and places to go.

Throughout the tour you’ll stay in Morioka City in a modern Japanese hotel with western-style rooms with a restaurant & bar. The comfortable rooms are equipped with 2 single beds, great heating, private ensuite bathroom, TV, and free WiFi.

The tour includes daily buffet breakfast.

Here is a short teaser of what you can expect to ride in Tohoku.....

The itinerary is kept flexible so you can ride at the best ski area based on snow and weather conditions as selected by your guides each day. Here is a sample itinerary:

Arrival Day

You’ll be met at Morioka Station and transferred by bus to the city based hotel. After checking into the hotel, you’ll have the afternoon free to explore the surrounding area, head to the onsen, or just relax. In the evening, the crew will regroup for a Welcome Session where you’ll meet your guides who will run you through the tour, weather, equipment and answer any questions you have. Join the group for dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 - 6

You will spend 5 days exploring the surrounding resorts. Each day your guide will assess the weather and conditions and select the best place to ride. After riding, take the time to experience the onsen. Your legs will thank you for it! Each evening your guide will take you to one of great local restaurants in Morioka city. Here’s just some of the destinations you may get to experience.

Appi Kogen

This resort is often overlooked by many as a family resort, however your guides have some secret spots here which are well worth checking out. Last season the resort underwent a terrain expansion and extended their gladed tree run zones from 7 hectares to 60 hectares! Follow your guides into the trees where you’ll find fresh lines, and virtually no competition.

Hachimantai Resort Shimokura

This secret little gem is great fun for a day. On first glance looks it like every other semi-closed down ski resort in Japan. Don’t let this fool you though, this place often scores more snowfall than the nearby resorts and the mostly north facing slopes keeps the snow in pristine condition. The old school chairlifts gives you access to some short and steep terrain. When this place turns on it’s absolutely on!

Tazawako / Nyuto Onsen

To say that this place scores a lot of snow is a massive understatement. During winter Tazawako receives one of the highest snowfalls in the region. While some of the more popular resorts in the region might become tracked out by lunch time, great lines can still be found here even a day or two after snow, making it perfect for days without fresh snowfall. After riding you will stop at Nyuto Onsen and visit the famous Tsurunoyu Onsen, which dates back to the Edo Period (1603-1867). The large, mixed gender outdoor bath is iconic of the region, and there are single gender indoor baths available as well.

Geto Kogen

Geto Kogen is another empty ski area with high altitude that keeps the snow in pristine condition. This area scores a serious amount of snowfall and best of all, mid-week there are no crowds. Follow your guides into the trees to find some of the best fall-line tree runs in the area.

Departure Day

All good things must come to come to an end, and after an epic week riding deep, Japanese powder you will transferred back to Morioka Station and say goodbye.
