  • You’re guaranteed to ride the best snow available every day with a flexible itinerary
  • Riding in a small group of 7 people keeps the group moving at a fast pace on a powder day
  • Staying in a traditional Japanese Lodge, you'll get a taste of Japanese life
  • Get in front of the punters and ride boot to waist deep powder every day

Join a Myoko Freeride Week and you’ll get to experience an amazing area that is blessed with lots of snowfall, low crowds and minimal western influence. Throughout the tour the guides will show you why the Niigata & Nagano regions are some of their favourite places to ride in Japan.

Your base for this tour is Myoko Kogen in a Japanese-style lodge in private rooms with shared bathroom facilities. From here you can easily access many of the surrounding resorts. The terrain ranges from big mountain lines to undulating tree riding. The itinerary is kept flexible so your guides can find the best conditions and terrain on the day.

What's a "Powder Hunter Tour"?

These are tours are all about chasing the big winter storms. By keeping the itinerary flexible your guide will assess the conditions and decide which is the best place to ride based on weather and snowfall. Your guide who has a lot of experience riding in these areas as well as reading the conditions and terrain, will make sure you find the goods.  There are several great resorts within easy reach from the hotel base including Akakura Onsen, Suginohara, Ikenotaira, Seki Onsen, Arai, Madarao, Tangram & Kurohime. Each day the group will load up the 4WD vans and drive to the chosen destination for the day.

Small Groups

By limiting the group size to a maximum of 7 people per guide ensures you get the most out of your time with less time waiting around for the group to congregate, which means more time riding powder!!!!

Snow Conditions

Late January & February is the best time of year to experience skiing and snowboarding in Niigata & Nagano. What you can expect is light and dry snow, perfect for riding powder. Temps will be cold, with temperatures ranging from -1 to -10 degrees celsius. Most days you can expect to ride powder that’s anywhere from boot to waist deep. Even if there isn't fresh snow overnight, the cold temperatures and your guide's local knowledge will ensure you’ll ride powder even days after a storm.

Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo you won’t be alone. In fact the tour is perfect for solo travellers and you will be matched you up with someone to room with for the entire time. Not only are your guides with you on-mountain during the day, they keep the stoke going well into the night, so you’ll always have crew to hang out with and places to go.

Accommodation

Throughout the tour you’ll stay in Myoko Kogen in a Japanese-style lodge with western-beds & rooms have heating, free wifi & TV. The lodge has a restaurant (where you will have breakfast & dinner each day) & an in-house bar that serves Asahi on tap.

Here is a short teaser of what you can expect to ride in the area.....

A Typical Day

The itinerary is kept flexible so you can ride at the best ski area based on snow and weather conditions as selected by your guides each day. Here is what a typical day might look like:

Each morning your guide will explain the weather and snow conditions for the day and advise the group where you’ll be riding. The van will be loaded up and driven to the chosen resort each day. Once at the resort you will spend the day exploring the hill and the guide will show you their favourite powder stashes. Your guide is there to get you the most out of your time on snow, they will assist in showing you around the resort as well as finding any type of terrain you desire to ride. Spend the day cruising the groomers, get stuck into some famous Japan tree runs, find some pillows to hit or session a drop into a deep powder landing – whatever you want to ride your guide can find it for you!

After your legs have had enough powder the group may opt to visit a traditional Japanese onsen to relax and soothe the muscles. These unique natural hot springs use geothermal water from the ground, which contain minerals that are said to be great for sore muscles and the skin.

Or if you’re looking to immerse yourself in local culture, there is an opportunity to visit the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, or the neighbouring town of Takada.

In the evenings, you can kick back with a beer or sake and enjoy a traditional home cooked Japanese dinner. Then you can set out to explore the many bars in the village.

The great thing about this tour is each day will be unique and exciting. The flexible itinerary means your tour will feel less like a tour and more like an adventure!
