Tim's Trip - New for 2020

Tim Macartney-Snape, a well known and world-class mountaineer, has been leading a few select tours with Journey Into Japan for many years. This year, Tim's been given the reins to design a trip that takes in his favourite backcountry powder skiing destinations and stashes, which happen to be in Central Hokkaido.

The first section of Tim's tour warms up at Furano and then heads to Asahi Dake, which features high open slopes amongst the volcanic fumaroles, and tree skiing amongst the deep gullies below. Asahidake has a cable car which is used as a starting point to the incredible backcountry and side country routes. Then it’s on to the spectacular Tokachi Mountains for more deep open lines up high. Tokachi is pure backcountry. No lifts, just beautiful wilderness. And finally Tim's Trip heads to Sounkyo for some true steep and deep lines around the rugged summit of Kurodake or the nearby Kitami backcountry area where the powder can be ridiculously deep! It is unlikely that the Kurodake ropeway and chair lift will be open during January, so access would be purely via skinning.

Transport throughout is via private 4WD mini bus providing complete autonomy and the freedom to vary the daily skiing schedule should the snow conditions and weather dictate a change in the daily itinerary.

Ability & Fitness

This tour is ideally suited to advanced skiers & snow boarders with an excellent level of fitness as there will be a lot of hiking/skinning involved, and Tim doesn't take it slowly! Experience with the use of skins and AT gear is ideal.

With regards to gear, you will need climbing skins and AT gear plus avalanche safety gear. If you are a snowboarder you will need a split-board. Equipment is available to rent.

This tour uses traditional Japanese-style accommodations so you can be assured of the chance to experience authentic local food and hospitality. The following properties are where the tours usually stay, however they may vary due to availability but these will be typical of the alternatives.

Lodge Nutappu is a family run property located just a short walk to the ropeway (cable car). It is a rustic log cabin with its own restaurant and bar and segregated men's/women's indoor and outdoor onsen. There are several other hotels nearby that also have some superb public onsens (but they do cost to get in) but worth a look!
Accommodation at Tokachidake is typically at Kamihoroso which is a lovely traditional Japanese mountain lodge. It has a superb outdoor hot spring with spectacular views and offers traditional Japanese multi-course cuisine for dinner and a western Japanese buffet breakfast in its dining area. Rooms are Japanese-style (futons on the tatami floor) with private ensuites. Free wifi is available in the common areas.
