Deluxe Ski & Snowboard Package -Ryokan Biyu

Increase your chances of good snow by having the option to ski or snowboard at two resorts; Shiga Kogen is the largest and highest ski resort in Asia with 19 interconnecting resorts which can be accessed on the one pass, and Ryuoo Ski Park is a family friendly resort which has the largest capacity ropeway in Japan. Both resorts boast an amazing panoramic view over the Nagano prefecture and have the benefit of being relatively free of any western influence giving you the truly authentic Japanese ski experience. Drive time varies from 15 to 25 minutes to each of these resorts and your five days of skiing can be a mix of both resorts.

This package is customisable from 3 nights so you can add days and other services such as lessons, mountain guiding or equipment rental. Please enquire for a quote specific to your requirements.

For solo travellers wishing to join a group please check out either the Nagano Beginner Package or Nagano Powder Chaser

About Ryokan Biyunoyado

Ryokan Biyu No Yado (Ryokan Yudanaka View) is a large Yudanaka hotel that’s a great choice for your stay in snow monkey town. Being a ryokan, it provides a lovely Japanese cultural experience with Japanese style accommodation, various gorgeous onsen baths, taiko drum shows, and delicately prepared evening meals. However Ryokan Biyu No Yado also provides a few extras that make this Japanese hotel popular with western travellers. Some of the staff speak English, there is the option of a western style breakfast, the option of western beds, the option to sit on chairs for dinner (rather than the floor), and there is a large communal area that includes a bar for après ski drinks.

Where is Ryokan Biyu No Yado?

Ryokan Biyunoyado is located in the town of Yudanaka, 700 metres southeast of the Yudanaka train station. The cute ryokan street of Shibu Onsen is 1.5km to the east.

See our Yudanaka page for information on getting to the town. The hotel provides free transport between the Yudanaka train station and the ryokan.

The snow monkey onsen is very close by; only 3km to the trail head. A free shuttle is available to the snow monkey park.

Getting to the Ski Resorts

Biyu makes a great base to ski or snowboard at Shiga Kogen. The Sun Valley area of Shiga is only 12km away. There are buses between Yudanaka and Shiga Kogen, although it takes a while to get there due to the frequent stops.

There are many other quality ski resorts near Yudanaka. A great way to explore these is with a Japan Powder Culture tour. The tours include accommodation at Ryokan Biyu No Yado, transport to the ski resorts, and guiding to show you the powder stashes (and the option of instruction):

Other Important Information

Terrain & SafetyThe rules when skiing at resorts in Japan can be a lot different to what is experienced in Western resorts around the world. At a high percentage of the resorts in Japan, trail skiing is the norm and anything off the main marked trails is deemed "out-of-bounds". The out of bounds is not patrolled so as far as the resort is concerned; skiing there is at your own risk. The out of bounds skiing provided by ESA is deemed (what has been termed in Japan by westerners) “slack country” or “side country”. Many times these out of bounds areas are in between two marked courses so at the bottom of the run you meet up on a marked course to take you back to the lifts, hence the term “slack country”.

Some resorts are more lenient with "out-of-bounds" skiing and others very strict. Some will have signs that state "ski at your own risk" where others may not. JPCT consider everything that is not on a marked trail to be out of bounds.

If you wish to experience the "out-of-bounds" (skiing off any of the marked trails) areas:
  1. You must carry the essential avalanche safety equipment (beacon, shovel, probe & backpack to carry such gear)
  2. You must be able to ski at a sufficient ability / level to manage the conditions on the day for any out-of-bounds runs
  3. You will need to undertake an safety instruction session on the use of your avalanche equipment (even if you already know how to use it)
  4. You will be required to sign a release of liability agreement prior to undertaking any out-of-bounds skiing with ESA
The JPCT team have the following credentials:
  • knowledge and experience at skiing the various resorts they visit in the Nagano and Niigata areas
  • accreditation and different combinations of instructors, ski patrol, avalanche awareness and first aid
  • ski instructors have a minimum of level 2 NZIAS certification
Exclusion of Liability & RiskAdventure sports activities involve many risks, dangers and hazards. These risks and hazards are outlined in the JPCT release of liability, waiver of claims, assumptions of risks and indemnity agreement which all participants are required to read and sign before participating in adventure sports activities. This agreement will affect your legal rights should you be involved in an accident.
