Amihari, Shizukuishi & Tazawako Tour - NEW for 2020!!

Get off-the-beaten-path this winter in Iwate & Akita Prefectures where you will experience rich Japanese culture and find endless untracked lines of powder and very few foreigners.

This tour actually begins at Amihari Onsen Hotel where you spend the first 3 nights and have a couple of days exploring the side/backcountry with a certified English speaking guide at the resorts of Amihari ski resort and/or Iwate Kogen.

From here you will move to the Shizukuishi Prince Hotel where you will be based for 2 nights and where you have a free ski day at the great little resort of Tazawako and then a cat ski morning at Shizukuishi with the option to ski/ride the afternoon at Shizukuishi ski resort.

The tour concludes with a night in Morioko city where you can experience the Japanese city culture and its many restaurants and bars.

It is important to note that this IS NOT a "hosted tour" but rather a package tour coordinated by the Tourism office (IGR Tourist). Transfers are provided by the ski resorts and hotels and guiding companies are independent operators. IGR Tourist will be available to assist you with their English speaking staff throughout your trip.

Who Is This Trip For?

Whilst there is an opportunity to ski/snowboard for a few days at ski resorts, this tour has an element of side/backcountry so you must have some desire to earn your turns and you should have your own touring gear and avalanche safety gear for this trip.

You should be at least a strong intermediate with powder skiing/riding experience, some knowledge of ski touring and a good level of fitness.

Inclusions & Add-Ons

This package includes quality accommodation in 2 locations, daily breakfast & dinner, some lift passes, ground transfers between destinations, and 2 days of guided backcountry skiing/boarding.

Amongst other activities, there is also the option of additional guided days at the ski areas visited.

Solo Travellers & Groups

Tours are based on private groups with a minimum of 2 people (and up to a maximum of 9) required to run a tour, and tours can start any day of the week for any duration from a minimum of 3 days/nights.

IMPORTANT! The sample itinerary and pricing is based on the "fixed dates" as some of the services such as guiding and cat skiing may vary in pricing on different days and are subject to availability at the time of booking.

If you are a solo traveller register for one of the "fixed date" tours as they only require 2 guests to run the tour.

Bookings & Enquiries

IGR Tourist is a Japanese tourism organisation who can provide a quote for your specific needs and as you can see from the sample package, they offer exceptional value.

So jump on a fixed-date tour as a solo traveller, grab your partner, family or get a group together and head north to Tohoku for the adventure of a lifetime!

Enquire to get a quote specific to your group's needs.

Sample Itinerary

This tour starts at Morioka station in Iwate prefecture so you will need to take the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Morioka. You can find more details on travelling to Morioka here>>.

Day 1 - Arrival day & transfer to Amihari Hot Spring Hotel

On arrival at Morioka station, you will be greeted by English-speaking IGR staff.

You will then be transferred from the station to your accommodation at Amihari Hot Spring Hotel which is located ski-in/out at Amihari Ski Resort where you will spend the next 3 nights.

Your room will be a Japanese tatami-style room to give you a taste of the real Japan.

Once you are settled into your room, take a relaxing hot spring (onsen) at the hotel.

In the evening you will be treated to a local/international buffet.

Day 2 - Amihari Guided Day

After a scrumptious buffet breakfast you will meet with your English speaking certified backcountry guide to discuss the day's activities.

You will then spend the entire day with your guide exploring the backcountry in and around Amihari (or another nearby area).

Before dinner head to the hotel's onsen to rejuvenate your muscles.

In the evening you will be treated to a traditional Japanese Kaiseki dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 - Resort Day - Amihari or Iwate Kogen

After a hearty buffet breakfast, you have the freedom to self-explore and ski/ride either Amihari ski resort (at your front-door) or Iwate Kogen ski resort which is located just 5 mins drive from the hotel.

Alternatively you could hire a guide for the day (for an extra cost) and explore the great backcountry in this area.

After a day on the slopes, hit the lovely outdoor onsen to soothe those muscles.

In the evening you will enjoy another local/international buffet at the hotel.

Day 4 - Guided BC Day & Transfer to Shizukuishi

After another fabulous buffet breakfast you will meet your guide who will take you exploring some of the side/backcountry in the Iwate area via a combination of lifts and touring.

After a full day of guided skiing/riding you will be transferred from the Amihari Hot Spring Hotel to the Shizukuishi Prince Hotel where you will spend the next 2 nights.

Relax in a superior western-style room with nice views & head to the beautiful hotel onsen.

In the evening you will be treated to a French cuisine dinner at the hotel.

Day 5 - Skiing/Riding Tazawako Resort

After your international buffet breakfast you will be transferred to the Tazawako ski resort (in Akita prefecture) for a day of free-riding.

If you would like to do some lift-access side/backcountry skiing/boarding, a guide can be arranged at an additional cost.

At the end of the day you will be transferred back to the Shizukuishi Prince Hotel for some onsen action and an international buffet for dinner.

Day 6 - Cat Ski Morning at Shizukuishi & Transfer to Morioka

After breakfast you will head to the old disused ski area next to Shizukuishi ski resort where you will ride up in a fancy snowcat and ski top to bottom. You will do this 3 times and be finished mid morning.

After cat skiing the time is yours to relax or to explore the Shizukuishi ski resort.

At 4:30 pm you will be transferred to Morioka station and then it's a 5 minute walk to the Metropolitan Hotel where you will spend your final night.

There are some fabulous bars and restaurants in this small city and you will get a great taste of the real Japan!
