Rishiri's Island Volcano

The Rishiri's Island Volcano tour starts with 4 days of skiing the secluded and highly famed Central Hokkaido backcountry and then it culminates with Rishiri Island. For 3 days you will ski the huge flanks of Mt Rishiri volcano, accessed by snowmobile on the approaches.

Rishiri Island is on the bucket list for many Japanese backcountry skiers!

This is a true Japanese backcountry ski adventure, combining touring from a hot spring accommodation, bathing in hot thermal springs and savouring the delicious local seafood.

The Areas

Rishiri Island rises out of the Sea of Japan to 1,721 meters. The island was formed by the volcanic peak of Mount Rishiri. The area is part of the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park. Rishiri Island is located in the Sea of Japan, about 20 km off the northwest coast of Hokkaido. The Oshidomari Port on Rishiri Island can be accessed via ferry from Wakkanai (Hokkaido’s northernmost town).

Kurodake is one of the Powderhounds' favourite ski areas in Japan, and with some lift assistance, it's a great place to get your touring legs warmed up.

The Central Hokkaido backcountry has some fabulous secret spots to make the most of the abundant deep dry powder. For a couple of the days, you'll get some initial assistance from a snowmobile.

Recommended Experience Level

The minimum ski ability for this tour is high advanced to expert, and experience in backcountry touring is required.

To make the most of your trip we recommend that you have an excellent level of aerobic fitness. You will carry 30 liter day packs with day equipment and provisions.

Who Can Join This Tour?

Day 1
Meet in Asahikawa. Dinner at a traditional Japanese restaurant to discuss the trip logistics.

Day 2
Ski the first day at Kurodake. There is some great backcountry terrain with a hike to the peak. Retire to the hot spring at the end of the day. Check out the ice village after the hot spring.

Day 3
The group will travel south and ski a favourite backcountry location. Ski the ‘Chuting Gallery.’ Transfer to next hot spring hotel.

Day 4
Snowmobile accessed backcountry. You will be towed in to a secluded valley. If conditions allow, we will ski ‘Bear Claw’ which is the premier line in the area. Retire to the hot springs at the end of the day before a traditional 'kaiseki' meal.

Day 5
Snowmobile accessed backountry.

Day 6
Travel day to the far north of Hokkaido. We will be seeing the sea ice of the Sea of Okhotsk. From the departure port of Wakkanai you will see Russian influences due to the town’s proximity to Sakhalin Peninsula. If there is clear weather on the voyage you will see the remarkable sight of the volcano protruding from the ocean.

Day 7- 9
Over the next three days you will transported via snowmobile accross the mellow approaches to the mountain before skinning. You will then ski some of the longest verticals descents in Hokkaido. If there is a clear day, ski from the summit and on low visibility days you will stay in the sheltered tree-line areas where the powder is deep. Each day enjoy the thermal outdoor hot-spring to finish. In the evening, enjoy expertly prepared seafood by your hosts.

Day 10

Morning return ferry. On our return journey we make a stop at a local resort for some sidecountry turns.

Day 11
Airport transfer
