Hakkoda Powder Snow Guides are a great pick if you’re looking for a Hakkoda ski guide. The guiding fees are great value considering that a Niseko guided tour would cost twice as much.

So you already know that Hakkoda is the powder capital of Japan and that this is the place for powder hounds to revel amongst the freshies. Hopefully you also know that hiring a guide at Hakkoda is essential. Route finding can be difficult in fine weather (which is rare) and it’s even trickier during the frequent blizzards. Apart from not getting lost, having a guide also lessens the risks associated with hazards such as avalanches, tree wells and volcanic vents.

Hakkoda Powder Snow Guides was previously under the leadership of Simon. In November 2016 Simon sadly passed after a well fought battle with cancer, and he’s left behind a great powder legacy of guides who can show you the joys of Hakkoda, Simon’s former playground.

Hakkoda Terrain

The terrain covered during a tour with Hakkoda Powder Snow Guides is tailored according to the weather, snow conditions, avalanche risk, and the skills and preferences of the group. See our Hakkoda ski terrain page for information on the terrain.

Whilst you need to be fit to ski or board at Hakkoda, don’t worry about having to bust a gut earning your turns. On days when they can head “out the back”, the walks are not excessively strenuous. Hikes range from only 100 metres to about 30 minutes, and they never go up the steep fall-line.

Many of the lines “out the back” head down to the road and the guides coordinate a vehicle and driver to meet the group to drive them back to the ropeway. How good is that?!

Why Choose Hakkoda Powder Snow Guides?

The guides’ first language is English. Whilst a few of the other Hakkoda guides may speak a little Engrish, they don’t speak English well, and some of the local guides don’t speak any English at all. There’s enough risk of getting lost at Hakkoda without also getting “lost in translation”. The Hakkoda Powder Snow Guides have ready access to interpreters for any intricate communications such as lodging, weather and other logistics.

The groups are reasonably small (maximum 8 guests) and have a lead and tail guide. Conversely the Japanese guides take out huge packs of people. This limits the likelihood of scoring freshies, and poses safety issues regarding avalanche risk and keeping track of everyone.

The guides are highly experienced at guiding at Hakkoda. They know the terrain and the elements well.

The guides are a huge source of information and understand that English speaking travellers will come across some challenges when travelling in Japan. They are happy to use their extensive knowledge and their networks to help with any queries you may have.

The tours go from 9am to 3pm each day. The guiding fee doesn't include the ropeway ticket or any equipment rental.

Avalanche beacons, skins or snowshoes, backpacks and poles are required at Hakkoda. The guides have plenty of these available for rent.

Considering that group sizes are limited, it is very wise to book ahead of time. To request dates or ask any questions you can click here.

The guides can assist in making a booking for accommodation at the Hakkoda Resort Hotel (pending availability).
