Hakuba Backcountry Powder Tour

The Hakuba Backcountry Powder Tour takes in the steep and deep of the Hakuba area. Each day the guides will take you to the best ski location for that day. Every day is different in the mountains and conditions are ever changing. Let the guides do the thinking for you.

For the 21/22 season this tour will be for private bespoke packages. Please enquire to discuss your requirements and whether you would like the focus on lift-accessed sidecountry or getting a little further afield into the Hakuba backcountry via ski touring/split boarding/snowshoes.

The Hakuba Powder Tour can cater to strong intermediate riders as well as advanced/experts skiers and snowboarders.

Sidecountry, ski touring and ski mountaineering at Japan's mecca, the Northern Japanese Alps, is a fabulous destination to push your limits and ski the deep and steep back country that is hands down the best big mountain skiing that Japan has to offer. Big mountains and deep snow can of course mean heightened avalanche danger. GoodGuides professional and certified guides will keep you safe and keep you skiing good snow in whatever weather and avalanche conditions the mountains bring.

Goodguides have over 10 years experience of skiing in central Japan giving them an intimate knowledge of the local mountains, weather patterns and local culture. Owner and operator Jerry Williams has fluency in the Japanese language, and his love of Japanese culture will ensure you get a well rounded trip with the absolute best in both skiing and culture.

All guides are professionally trained and qualified and are in the field everyday and know the conditions and terrain inside out.

They also have an extensive network in the local community enabling them to access local knowledge and information from the surrounding snow community.

Ability & Fitness

These tours are aimed at skiers and riders who are strong intermediate riders wanting to gain more backcountry experience, and advanced to expert to riders. This Hakuba backcountry tour involves a lot of up-hill hiking/skinning on skis, split board or snow shoes so you will need to have a very good level of fitness. Side country and ski touring groups will be split accordingly.

Equipment Required

You will have avalanche safety gear supplied as part of the package, however you will also need touring gear which could be skis with touring bindings & skins, split board with skins and/or snow shoes. Goodguides has a range of backcountry rental at great rates.

These tours can also be customised to your dates and group (subject to availability). Enquire here for a custom quote>>

Advanced bookings are essential as these tours book out well ahead of time.

Staying in beautiful Hakuba...

...plenty of restaurants & bars

Itinerary

This tour is based in Hakuba.

Day 1:

Transfer to Hakuba to where your guide will be waiting to greet you. From there your guide will give you an introduction to the local area, make sure you have everything you need and deliver you to your hotel for some relaxation before your dream ski trip begins.

Day 2-7:

Your professional mountain guides will decide the best place to ski each day. Your first morning will start with an in-depth avalanche safety briefing and training. This will give you the confidence to use your equipment with the aim of giving you more skills and knowledge to take away with you at the end of the trip. From here the group will potentially ski at any of the 9 resorts within the Hakuba Valley and also other non-ski field access backcountry locations, which we do not wish to disclose here.

Day 8:

Wind up the trip with a day of free skiing and or transfer back to the airport or your next destination.

Hamon Lodge

The lodge has a distinctly Japanese feel with traditional décor such as tatami flooring and shoji screens in the rooms, along with beautiful wooden furniture, yet it has some great features that are well appreciated by westerners such as comfortable beds, a relaxing living area, and a restaurant and bar where you can enjoy a cold beer.

Guest Rooms

The delightful rooms have warm lighting, soft timber finishes, traditional tatami flooring and original shoji screens that reflect a true Japanese style ryokan, representative of the real rural mountain village accommodation you’d expect in Japan. The rooms are warm, have comfortable mattresses and plenty of space for all your luggage requirements.

The lodge has double or twin rooms for up to 2 guests. Bathroom facilities are shared which includes an onsen style wet room in-house, so you can soak after a long day on the hill and rest those weary muscles.

Location

Hamon Lodge is located ski-in ski-out at the Hakuba Tsugaike Ski Resort, which offers the best sidecountry and backcountry terrain in Hakuba.

Tsugaike has its own distinctly Japanese village that has a smattering of restaurants and bars so you’ll be well fed and watered. The lodge offers easy access to local village shuttles services so you can explore the Hakuba Valley in its entirety.

Other Lodge Amenities

The lodge has a drying room and the heaters will be left running all night (unlike at some Japanese lodges!).
