Gunma Niigata Explorer - NEW for 2020!

The Gunma Niigata Explorer offers a chance to get away from the crowds, be immersed in local culture and deep Japanese powder snow! This is a customisable tour for private groups who want to explore some of legendary backcountry of Japan and ideally you’ll want to include some backcountry touring to make the most of the terrain.. Trips are customised to suit your group’s needs and price point. Please enquire to discuss your requirements and to get a quote.

This tour can either be the main event, or it makes a great adjunct after a stay in Hakuba or Myoko on the way back to Tokyo.

The Area

Gunma and Niigata are two large snowbound prefectures situated directly west of Tokyo. Gunma prefecture is landlocked and is renowned in Japan for its mountains, hot springs and ski fields just a short trip from Tokyo. Neighbouring Niigata boasts some of the highest annual snow falls in Japan and is famous for its delicious rice, sake (rice wine) and amazing seafood. Due to the close proximity to Tokyo (and the airport), hundreds of ski fields were built throughout the region during the economic bubble of the 1980s/1990s. Many of these ski fields are now sparsely populated with skiers and even less visited by foreign ski tourists.

This tour is based in Minakami in Gunma or Yuzawa in Niigata. From Minakami, it’s easy to access the mighty Tenjindaira and Hotaka-san (with potential access from Minkami Houdaigi Ski Resort), whilst Yuzawa is close to Hakkaisan and Kagura, just to name a couple of great spots. The two towns are only about 30km apart, so it’s possible to commute to any of the legendary ski areas in the region.

The Guides

Goodguides have over 10 years experience of skiing in central Japan giving them an intimate knowledge of the local mountains, weather patterns and local culture. Owner and operator Jerry Williams has fluency in the Japanese language, and his love of Japanese culture will ensure you get a well rounded trip with the absolute best in both skiing and culture.

All guides are professionally trained and qualified and are in the field everyday and know the conditions and terrain inside out. They also have an extensive network in the local community enabling them to access local knowledge and information from the surrounding snow community.

Ability & Fitness

This tours is aimed at skiers and riders who are strong intermediate riders wanting to gain more backcountry experience, and advanced to expert to riders. Ideally you’ll want to include some backcountry touring to make the most of the terrain.

Equipment Required

You will have avalanche safety gear supplied as part of the package, however you will also need touring gear which could be skis with touring bindings & skins, split board with skins and/or snow shoes.

Your first morning will start with an in depth avalanche safety briefing and training. This will give you the confidence to use your equipment with the aim of giving you more skills and knowledge to take away with you at the end of the trip.

Your professional mountain guides will decide the best place to ski each day based on weather and snow conditions. The Gunma and Niigata areas provide the guides with a license to explore. There are a multitude of areas the group could potentially ski at and we will choose the best option each day after we discuss with you what your objectives are.

Day 7 (Departure Day):

After breakfast you will check out of the hotel and head back to Tokyo or onto your next adventure, with a lifetime of incredible memories.
