A Little Gem

Amihari Onsen
Off-piste skiing (in-bounds)
A nice soak at the end of the day
Amihari Onsen is our idea of the ideal Japanese ski resort: stuck in the Japanese bubble era time warp where glitz and glamour are not important; inexpensive; great onsen; barely any other westerners there (and only Japanese staff); and you really know you’re in Japan.

We loved staying and skiing at Amihari Onsen (you can also see our review of the Amihari Onsen Hotel). There was really only enough terrain at Amihari for one day of skiing, but it was full of fresh tracks and we managed to discretely steer clear of the ski patrollers (despite a couple of silly gaijin skiing the lift line which can put patrollers on high alert). Amihari was also well located to access other nearby ski resorts.

You can see our Japanese ski resort ratings to see how we rated Amihari against other Iwate and Japanese ski resorts.
